McMURRAY – Any time Canon-McMillan had a glimmer of hope, Peters Township snuffed it out.

When the Big Macs scored in the first half, the Indians responded with a goal 30 seconds later.

And when Canon-McMillan received a penalty in the second half, Indians keeper Jack Stewart stoned Cole Debbis’ shot with a diving save to his right.

It’s those moments that are separators and why the Indians are unbeaten going into October.

Peters Township went on to win 3-1 Tuesday night at Confluence Financial Partners Stadium and successfully swept its Class 4A Section 2 boys soccer rival in the process.

“It’s a big rivalry game, so you want to come out and play well,” Peters Township’s Cam Glass said. “And since it’s a rivalry game you get pumped up beforehand and you want to give 110 percent from the get-go. It feels good to win it.”

Peters Township scored a pair early, but its most important tally on the night was its third.

That’s because it was a response goal.

After Debbis successfully halved Peters Township’s lead near the midpoint of the first half, Keedan Kelly scored 30 seconds later to regain the two-goal advantage.

It was Kelly’s second goal of the season, a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

“It was enormous to answer their goal back with a goal of our own,” Peters Township coach Bob Dyer said. “Their goal was errors by us. Now granted they created the errors and finished the goal, but it was our errors that caused it and I think that was complacency. Maybe that lit a fire under us a little bit and we went down and got a goal. Obviously it’s not planned to score a goal after giving up one, but it was nice to answer it.”

Stewart’s big save on the penalty was the third time he’s stopped one this season.

Peters Township (6-0-1, 9-0-1) won the first meeting 1-0 at Canon-McMillan (4-3, 9-3) on Sept. 9.

The rematch would have a lot more scoring, and it started early.

Peters Township’s Charlie Lulich set the tone for what would become a wild first half with a goal in the third minute.

Eight minutes later, Glass scored for the Indians to make it 2-0. Glass’ goal came off a corner kick.

“It bounced right to me and I took one touch and tried to pass it into the back of the net,” Glass said. “I couldn’t have done it without a great corner kick.”

Canon-McMillan got on the board in the 23rd minute. A failed clearance came to Adam Kuchera, who crossed to Debbis, whose shot was true to cut the lead to 2-1.

The positivity was short-lived, because of the goal by Kelly.

The Indians could’ve had a few more goals, but Canon-McMillan goalie Preston Godown had a strong game.

He stopped a power header from Colin Froehlich in the first half and robbed Anthony Maiello with a sprawling save in the second half.

After the missed penalty, Canon-McMillan continued to apply pressure, but Stewart was strong in net. He made a leaping stop on a Big Macs corner and gathered up a couple more balls to quell any danger.

Peters Township has not mathematically clinched the section title, but is in the driver’s seat. The Indians are 2-0 against Canon-McMillan and went 1-0-1 against Mt. Lebanon their two closest advisories. Connellsville, Upper St. Clair and Woodland Hills remain on the schedule.
