O-R Athlete of the Week: Gina Tedrow, Waynesburg
Name: Gina Tedrow
Grade: Senior
School: Waynesburg
Sport: Softball
Tedrow’s week: What’s better than one no-hitter in a week? How about pitching two of them? That’s what Tedrow accomplished during Waynesburg’s trip to the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee last week.
Tedrow did not allow a hit and struck out 13 hitters in an 8-0 win over Coventry (Ohio) on Monday and followed that up with a 17-strikeout no hitter as Waynesburg beat Woodridge (Ohio) 6-0 on Wednesday.
“Before we even played, I talked to (Waynesburg) coach Jim (Armstrong) about mixing up my pitches a lot more than we usually do,” Tedrow said. “I was throwing my curve, my rise, my drop change. Everything.
“My two-seam always works great. It’s my fastest pitch, but I like being able to throw my spin pitches a lot. Almost all of my third strikes down there were on spin pitches, whether it was the rise, curve or change. Even a couple drop changes, which I have started to getting down a lot better this year.”
The no-hitter on Wednesday was part of a doubleheader. In the second game, Tedrow had 18 strikeouts in a six-hitter and had a key double that helped Waynesburg rally to defeat Kenston (Ohio) 4-3. Eva Pester had an RBI single that gave Waynesburg the lead after Tedrow plated two with her double.
Between the two games, Tedrow had 35 strikeouts.
Bonding in Tennessee: This was the third consecutive season that Waynesburg has traveled to Tennessee to get some games in late March. It was a productive trip as far as wins and losses go as the Raiders left with a 3-1 record and a good way for the team to grow together.
“It’s a really good experience,” Tedrow said. “One of the things I really like about it is that we stay in a big cabin rather than a hotel. It forces everyone to talk to everybody else and allows everyone to get to know each other and get along better.”
College decision: Tedrow will continue her softball career at Garrett College, a junior college in Maryland. Garrett’s head coach is former PennWest California interim softball coach Nikki Yanchak.
“Nikki has been my pitching coach since I was eight years old,” Tedrow said. “I know her super well. She’s like family. It’s really comforting knowing that I’m going to have a coach that I’ll get along with and know how they coach already. One of my biggest fears was going to college and having a coach that was mean or someone I didn’t like the way they coached. I know I’m going to have a really good bond with who will be my head coach.”
Tedrow is going to enter an associates program in math and science at Garrett and will take nursing courses before transferring to a four-year school to get her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Final ride: Tedrow has a couple goals in her final season. One is for the team to win a playoff game for the first time and the other is a personal milestone.
“The last two years we’ve made the playoffs, but haven’t made it past the first round, so we want to get a win in the playoffs this year,” Tedrow said. “I just hit my 500th strikeout during the Brownsville game (Monday), so I know I want to get past 600 for my career. Every year I’ve had more than 200, so it seems pretty reasonable.”
