Blake Merckle had two hits and scored two runs, Ryan Huey struck out eight over five strong innings and Fort Cherry remained undefeated with a 6-3 win over McGuffey in a nonsection game at EQT Park on Thursday night.

Fort Cherry (6-0) scored the game’s first four runs and that was enough for Huey and reliever Dylan Lueck.

Wyatt Hildreth had a double among his three hits for McGuffey (2-4) and Preston Hornack tripled.

Avella 9, Waynesburg 2: Avella scored four runs only seven batters into the game and went on to defeat Waynesburg 9-2 in a nonsection game played at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va.

The early cushion was enough for three Avella (6-1) pitchers. Chas Rush gave up two hits and two runs in four innings, Bryce Wright followed with two shutout frames and Cam Ullom tossed a scoreless inning.

Wright, Rush and Noah Kimberland each doubled for Avella. Rush and Tristan Davis both drove in three runs, and Brayden Fuller drew four walks.

Grant Pack hit a two-run homer for Waynesburg (1-5).

Bentworth 4, Carmichaels 2: Ben Hays scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning on a groundout by Jacob Cavanaugh as Bentworth defeated host Carmichaels 4-2 in a nonsection game.

The game was tied 2-2 entering the seventh when Hays led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. The Bearcats’ Clint Havanis collected his third hit of the game, stole second and scored on a hit by Ty Watson for an insurance run.

Carmichaels was held to five hits by two Bentworth pitchers with Andrew Strejcek getting the win with four innings of relief.

Jordan Davis drove in both runs for the Mikes.

Frazier 7, Chartiers-Houston 5: Chartiers-Houston (2-2, 3-4) scored five runs in the top of the fourth to take a brief lead, but Frazier responded with two ryan in the bottom half and went on to secure a 7-5 win in a Class 2A Section 1 game.

Aaron Walsh had a two-run double in the fifth for the Bucs, who took a 5-4 lead. Frazier’s Chase Fulmer responded with an RBI double to tie it and Nick Porter singled in Fulmer to give the Commodores (2-1, 4-2) the lead back. Frazier added another run in the fifth.
