High school roundup: Makel magic in 8th gives Waynesburg win

Ellie Makel hit a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Waynesburg a 6-5 victory over Frazier in a Class 2A Section 4 softball game Monday.

Waynesburg (2-1, 5-2) led 4-3 before Frazier scored in the top of the seventh on a two-out error that forced extra innings.

In the eighth, the Commodores (1-3, 3-5) went ahead 5-4 on an RBI groundout.

In the bottom of the eighth, Madi Price reached on a one-out error and Devin Moore singled. A wild pitch advanced both runners. After a strikeout, Makel slapped her game-winner to right field.

Makel had led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run.

Winning pitcher Gina Tedrow struck out 15 but also walked six.

Carmichaels 11, Beth-Center 0: Bailey Barnyak fired a five-inning no-hitter, Carys McConnell and Kenlee Machesky each drove in three runs and Carmichaels scored 10 times in the first inning en route to an 11-0 win over Beth-Center in Class A Section 2.

Barnyak struck out 11 and walked two as Carmichaels improved to 3-0 in the section and 5-2 overall. The Mikes have won 21 consecutive section games.

Machesky hit a three-run double to cap the Mikes’ big first inning and McConnell drove in the first two runs with a double. Machesky finished the game with two doubles. KeLani Chun also had a two-bagger.

Burgettstown 3, Seton-LaSalle 2: Raya Sentipal raced home from third base on an infield grounder to score the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the sixth inning and give Burgettstown a 3-2 victory over Seton LaSalle in Class 2A Section 2.

Seton LaSalle (1-1, 3-1) had pulled into a 2-2 tie by scoring a run in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the frame, Sentipal led off with a double and advanced on a groundout.

Andi Midler then hit a ground ball to second base. Sentipal broke for home plate on the play and easily beat the Rebels’ throw to give Burgettstown (2-1 in section) the one-run lead.

That was all the cushion winning pitcher Evelyn Lehman needed as she retired the Rebels in order in the seventh inning. Lehman tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Layla Chapman also struck out 10.

South Fayette 10, Upper St. Clair 8: South Fayette built an early eight-run lead, then held on for a 10-8 win at Upper St. Clair in Class 5A Section 3.

The Lions (2-2, 3-5) led 8-0 in the third inning before USC (0-3, 2-5) chipped away and scored five times in the bottom of the seventh.

Baseball

Cameron (W.Va.) 13, West Greene 6: Cameron overcame an early three-run deficit by scoring eight runs in the fifth inning to beat West Greene, 13-6.

Dylan Hughes, Gavin Roberts and Jackson Grimes each doubled for West Greene (0-6), which led 4-1 in the second inning and 5-4 after four.
