Bentworth’s Gonglik fires no-hitter in win over Brownsville

BENTLEYVILLE – Sydney Gonglik isn’t certain on the number of no-hitters she has thrown in her high school softball career.

“I think it’s either six or eight, but I’m not sure,” Gonglik said.

It’s a good problem to have if you’ve thrown so many you’ve lost count.

Gonglik, an LSU commit, added another no-hitter to the list Wednesday.

She struck out 14 batters as Bentworth topped Brownsville 7-0 in a Class 2A Section 4 game.

Brownsville (2-2, 4-3) did not hit a ball out of the infield and Gonglik only yielded three baserunners. One was on an error on a bunt attempt by Brownsville’s Emma Leigh Bailey in the fourth inning and the other two were walks in the sixth.

“I just stayed confident in my pitches and trusting everything,” Gonglik said. “I trusted (her dad and Bentworth assistant coach Marty Gonglik’s) pitch calls, wherever he went with them. I just trusted my stuff and my defense behind me.”

Gonglik, a junior, was spotted a lead early. Bentworth (2-0, 7-0) scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Sofia Gaussa hit an infield single and Nora Lindley brought her in with an RBI double to the gap in right center. Zoie McDonald singled to put runners on the corners and Alexa Babirad brought them both home with a single up the middle.

“It meant a lot. There’s no way around it,” Bentworth coach Jack Cramer said of his team’s early runs. “If you can put up seven runs or even five or three runs on the board, it’s tough to come back against (Gonglik).”

Gonglik struck out eight of the first nine hitters she faced and retired 10 in a row to start the game. The only real danger she encountered was in the sixth when she walked Tavan Ternitsky and Lyla Gill to put two runners on with one out. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Bailey, but Gonglik fanned Lena Rechichar to strand the two runners in scoring position.

Bentworth broke the game open in the fifth by scoring three runs.

Gonglik led off with a triple and two batters later, her younger sister, Makayla Gonglik, belted a two-run shot over the centerfield fence.

“That was her first over-the-fence home run for her in her high school career, so I was happy for her,” Sydney Gonglik said.

Makayla’s homer chased Brownsville starting pitcher Ava Clark from the game. Rechichar came on in relief and was greeted by a single by Lindley.

Babirad brought home Lindley with a single, which increased the lead to 6-0.

Babirad, a freshman, finished 3-for-3 with three RBI.

Mikayla Gonglik, Lauren Lustik and Addison McVicker are the other freshmen that were in Bentworth’s starting lineup on Wednesday.

“The freshmen have really stepped up well,” Cramer said. “When we went down south (to Tennessee) to open up the season we had some unknowns. They played well down there and we got to see them play a variety of games. It let them see what they were capable of doing.”

Lindley added an RBI single in the seventh to put the Bearcats up 7-0. She finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.

Gonglik finished off her no-hitter by striking out Clark and pinch-hitter Gionna Pindardi in the bottom of the seventh.

Both Gongliks, and Gaussa had multi-hit games. Eight of Bentworth’s nine hitters reached base at least once and the only one that didn’t, Lustik, was robbed twice on good plays in the field by Brownsville.
