High school softball: Deer sets Burgettstown coaching wins record
Evelyn Lehman was almost unhittable as she fired a one-hit shutout, sparking Burgettstown to a 5-0 win at OLSH in a key Class 2A Section 3 game ON tHURSDAY.
Burgettstown improved to 4-1 in section and 5-3 overall. OLSH dropped to 2-2, 3-3.
With the win, Burgettstown’s Mark Deer became the all-time winningest coach (all sports) in Blue Devils history. His record is 371-214. Deer passed former former golf coach Jon Vallina (370-83).
The Blue Devils scored in each of the first four innings. Raya Sentipal went 3-for-4 and scored three runs, and Brooklyn Robinson was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Both Sentipal and Robinson doubled, as did Madelina Guiddy.
OLSH’s lone hit was a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh by Neveah Morin. Lehman struck out nine and walked three.
Washington 5, Waynesburg 4: Washington scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, on a wild pitch and outfield error, to rally for a 5-4 win over visiting Waynesburg in a key Class 3A Section 4 game.
The win keeps Washington (3-0, 6-1) undefeated in the section. The Prexies have won three straight.
Waynesburg (2-2, 5-3) led 3-1 in the second inning and 4-2 in the fourth. Wash High made it 4-3 on a solo home run by Kali Hagan.
It was still 4-3 in the sixth when Mayaja Lee led off with a double and winning pitcher Chessa Henderson followed with a walk to give Wash High the potential tying and winning runs.
Waynesburg outhit Wash High 10-5. Sophie McCort and Tateionna Warren had doubles for the Prexies. Devin Moore drove in three runs for Waynesburg.
Henderson struck out 12 and walked three. Gina Tedrow struck out 15 for Waynesburg and issued four walks.
Bentworth 17, California 1: Sydney Gonglik threw a three-inning no-hitter and drove in five runs, Nora Lindley added four RBI and Bentworth beat California 17-1 in Class 3A Section 4.
Gonglik allowed an unearned run. She walked one and struck out five. At the plate, she went 3-for-3 as Bentworth improved to 3-0 in section and 8-0 overall.
Chartiers-Houston 16, Carlynton 0: Seanna Riggle went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs, and in the circle she pitched a two-hit shutout, leading undefeated Chartiers-Houston to a 16-0 thumping of host Carlynton in Class 2A Section 3.
The Bucs (4-0, 10-0) had a 12-hit attack, led by Riggle and Taryne Drilak, who also had three hits. Riggle and Jordyn Hollenbach each hit a double. Hollenbach had a team-high three RBI.
Belle Vernon 11, West Mifflin 2: Belle Vernon unleashed a 17-hit attack on West Mifflin and beat the host Titans 11-2 in Class 4A Section 2.
Addyson Newman had four hits, Bella Williams drove in four runs and Kaylee Syplot smacked two doubles to lead the Belle Vernon (4-4, 6-5) offense.
Winning pitcher Willow Wentzell threw a four-hitter.
West Greene 15, Mapletown 0: West Greene improved to 6-3 overall, and 3-1 in Class A Section 2 with a 15-0 win in three innings at Mapletown.
Caitlin Whyte threw a no-hitter, striking out five with one walk.
Whyte was 1-for-3 at the plate, with a double and five RBI. Kendra Tharp had an RBI triple and scored twice. Emmaline Beazell doubled and drove in four, and Katie Brudnock had a run-scoring double.
Seneca Valley 7, Canon-McMillan 3: A five-run fourth inning helped Seneca Valley (5-1, 7-1) pull away for a 7-3 win over Canon-McMillan (4-2, 5-2) in a Class 6A game.
Riley Geyer had an RBI triple in the inning.
Sophie Carl hit a two-run homer in the fifth for the Big Macs.
