High school softball: Mapletown rallies for win
Lainey Taylor homered, Makenna Lotspeich drove in two runs and Mapletown overcame an early five-run deficit to beat visiting Avella 9-6 in a five-inning Class A Section 2 game Tuesday.
The game was called because of rain in the middle of the sixth inning. Avella scored two runs in the sixth to make it a one-run game, but the final score reverted back to the fifth inning because the sixth was unfinished.
The win makes Mapletown 1-6 in section and 2-7 overall.
Avella (0-4, 0-7) scored five runs in the top of the first inning, which included an RBI double by McKenna Northcraft.
Mapletown answered with three in the bottom of the first one in the second and took the lead with a three-run third. A two-run single by Lotspeich put the Maples up 7-6.
Winning pitcher Cora Roberts allowed one hit and struck out eight over 3.2 innings of relief.
