High school baseball: California stays unbeaten in section with walk-off win

Weston Monticelli scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Eli Carpenter in the bottom of the seventh inning to give California a 9-8 win over Bentworth in the completion of a suspended baseball game Wednesday in Class 2A Section 1.

The win keeps California unbeaten in the section at 6-0. The Trojans are 7-2 overall.

Bentworth (1-7, 2-7) led 4-2 before California scored five times in the fourth inning. The Bearcats, however, tied the score at 7-7 in the fifth. Cal went back on top at 8-7 and Bentworth tied it again in the top of the seventh on a solo homer by Zeek Malanosky.

In the bottom of the seventh, two walks put runners on first and second with no outs. Monticelli advanced to third on a fly ball before scoring on another fly ball.

Ian Grodz pitched three innings of relief to pick up the win.

Canon-McMillan 3, Mt. Lebanon 2: Keegan William scored from third base on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to break a tie and give Canon-McMillan a 3-2 win at Mt. Lebanon in the completion of a suspended game in Class 6A Section 2.

Canon-Mac (7-1, 12-1) stays in firm control of first place in the section. The Big Macs and Blue Devils have split the first two games of the three-game series.

C-M’s Troy Stimpson hit a solo home run and winning pitcher Matthew Kocan tossed 5.2 innings of one-run ball in relief. Kocan struck out seven.

Fort Cherry 7, Bishop Canevin 5: Nathan Wolfe hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth inning and undefeated Fort Cherry went on to a 7-5 win over visiting Bishop Canevin in a nonsection contest.

Fort Cherry (10-0) was locked in a 3-3 tie until Wolfe’s go-ahead two-out hit.

Landon Trnavsky hit a solo home run and Blake Sweder went 3-for-4 for Fort Cherry. Colton Temple added a double.

Dylan Lueck was the winning pitcher by throwing five innings. Temple was credited with a save.

Jamin Brock had two doubles and Jackson Maddix homered for Bishop Canevin (4-5).

South Fayette 7, Upper St. Clair 6: Bo Stover hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving South Fayette a 7-6 win over Upper St. Clair in Class 5A Section 2.

The win keeps South Fayette (6-2, 9-4) in first place in the section. The Lions rallied from a 6-5 deficit by scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Cody Bungert went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI to lead the Lions at the plate.

Charleroi 13, Washington 5: Charleroi scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to a 13-5 win over visiting Washington in Class 3A Section 4.

Wash High was held to three hits and committed seven errors that led to eight unearned runs.

Charleroi is 5-4 in the section and 6-5 overall.

Seton LaSalle 12, Waynesburg 5: After a slow start, Seton LaSalle scored 11 runs over its final three innings to beat visiting Waynesburg 12-5 and strengthen its hold on first place in Class 3A Section 4.

Waynesburg (3-3, 3-8) led 2-0 in the third inning, but Seton LaSalle (7-1, 8-2) scored five times in the fourth and followed it with a pair of three-run innings.

Lucas Slifko led Waynesburg at the plate, driving in three runs and hitting a double. Kory Taylor drove in two runs and Jarett Tretinik also doubled.

Elizabeth Forward 8, Belle Vernon 7: Daniel Spence’s walk-off, run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the host Warriors a Class 4A Section 2 win over the Leopards on Tuesday.

Jack Crovak had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs for EF (5-1, 7-5).

Jack Edwards doubled, singled and knocked in two runs for Belle Vernon (6-2, 8-3), which also got a hit and three RBIs from Connor Bergman.
