High school softball: Wormsley, Henderson lead Wash High to 4-3 win

Kieran Wormsley hit a three-run homer and Chessa Henderson tossed a five-hitter as Washington edged host Waynesburg 4-3 in a Class 2A Section 4 game Wednesday.

It was the second win of the season for Wash High (5-1, 9-2) over Waynesburg (2-4, 5-5) and keeps the Prexies in the hunt for the section title.

Wormsley’s home run gave Wash High a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The Prexies made it 4-0 in the sixth and then had to hold off a Waynesburg comeback. The Raiders scored twice in the sixth, once in the seventh and had the potential tying run on second base when the game ended.

Henderson struck out eight and did not issue a walk. Waynesburg’s Gina Tedrow allowed five hits. She walked one, struck out 14 and drove in two runs.

Chartiers-Houston 11, Burgettstown 1: Winning pitcher Taryne Drilak allowed only one unearned run and drove in four to help undefeated Chartiers-Houston to an 11-1 victory over Burgettstown in a battle of the top two teams in Class 2A Section 3.

Chartiers-Houston scored two runs in the top of the first inning and led 7-0 before Burgettstown pushed across its run in the fifth.

Lauren Rush and Kiera Drilak each had three hits for Chartiers-Houston. Rush had a triple. The Bucs had a 16-hit attack. Drilak struck out nine and walked one.

Burgettstown’s Andi Midler went 4-for-4.

South Fayette 8, Montour 7: Kendall Welhorsky was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, forcing in the tiebreaking run and capping a three-run inning as South Fayette rallied for an 8-7 win over Montour in Class 5A Section 3.

The Lions (5-3, 6-6) trailed 7-5 entering the bottom of the sixth but Liv Bonacci belted a two-run double to tie the score. It was the second double of the day for Bonacci.

Evie Vuono drove in three runs for South Fayette. Emma Ealrey allowed one run over three innings of relief to get the win.

Jefferson-Morgan 10, Beth-Center 0: Emilee Bazzoli fired a two-hit shutout, Ashlynn Snyder drove in four runs and Robi Finley hit a solo home run as Jefferson-Morgan defeated Beth-Center 1-0 in six innings in Class A Section 2.

The win keeps J-M (6-1, 9-2) atop the section.

Bazzoli struck out eight and issued only one walk. She was staked to a 7-0 lead after two innings.

Snyder led a 12-hit J-M attack by going 3-for-4 with a double. Ava Wood also had a double.

Carmichaels 12, Avella 0: Bailey Barnyak twirled a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts as Carmichaels defeated visiting Avella 12-0 in five innings in Class A Section 2.

Carmichaels improved to 4-1 in section and 6-3 overall.

Ke’Lani Chun gave Barnyak plenty of support as she tripled and finished with four RBI. Barnyak drove in three runs and Kenlee Machesky doubled and drove in a pair.

West Greene 11, Mapletown 1: West Greene improved to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in section play with an 11-1 win in five innings over Mapletown in Class A Section 2.

Winning pitcher Cailtin Whyte struck out 7 while tossing a one-hitter.

Emma Zalar scored Mapletown’s run in the top of the 5th, on the Maples’ only hit, an RBI single by Lainey Taylor.

West Greene’s Kendra Tharp had two RBI and scored twice. Emmaline Beazell had two hits, two RBI and scored twice. Kylee Davis, Sammi Zimmerman, and Madelyn Roberts each had 2 hits. Katie Brudnock was 2-for-3 with a game-ending single.

Bentworth 14, California 0: Bentworth remained undefeated with a 14-0 victory over California in Class 2A Section 4.

Alexa Babirad went 4-for-4 with three triples and four RBI to lead the Bearcats at the plate. Winning pitcher Makayla Gonglik fired a one-hitter with five strikeouts and went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Sofia Gaussa was 2-for-2 and hit a double.

Trinity 4, Peters Township 0: Sophomore Gabby Humphreys spun a three-hit shutout as Trinity blanked host Peters Township 4-0 in Class 5A Section 4.

The Hillers won by scoring single runs in four consecutive innings, the third through the sixth.

Humphreys struck out 14 and walked two.

McGuffey 10, East Allegheny 0: Miley Main tossed a one-hit shutout and McGuffey pulled away over the final two innings to beat East Allegheny 10-0 in a five-inning Class 3A Section 3 game.

The Highlanders led by only 1-0 after three innings before the Highlanders’ offense came alive. Ellie Henderson doubled and drove in three runs, Maura Janovich and Nicole Klages also doubled, and Main helped her cause with a pair of RBI. Julianna Ward had two hits and a pair of runs driven in.

Main struck out 10 and did not walk a batter.

Pine-Richland 11, Canon-McMillan 6: Pine-Richland scored seven runs, including three on a home run by Norah Cherry, to rally and beat Canon-McMillan 11-6 in Class 6A.

The Big Macs scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead into the seventh.

Callie Stonemark hit a solo home run for Canon-McMillan and Auroa Shirdon had an RBI double.

Keystone Oaks 4-5, Charleroi 3-4: Keystone Oaks picked up two close wins over Charleroi, 4-3 in nine innings and 5-4, in Class 3A Section 3.

Khloe Kaplack’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Keystone Oaks the win in the first game. The Golden Eagles built an early 5-0 lead in the second game before having to hold off a Charleroi comeback.

Charleroi’s Calie Rotolo had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs in the second game.

Serra Catholic 14, Monesen 1: Serra Catholic used a pair of seven-run innings to beat Monessen 14-1 in a five-inning Class A Section 3 game.

West Mifflin 12, Ringgold 1: Samantha Tomko drove in four runs and Rylie Dobnak pitched a three-hitter as West Mifflin defeated Ringgold 12-1 in a Class 4A Section 2 game.

Addy Allen smacked a triple and scored the lone run for Ringgold.
