High school baseball: Avella weathers 2-day delay, rallies for win

Avella picked up a big road win in Class A Section 1 , beating Jeannette 7-6 in come-from-behind fashion.

The game had been suspended because of rain on Tuesday with Jeannette holding a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning but Avella having the bases loaded. The Eagles tied the score after play resumed Thursday and the Avella won by scoring in the sixth when Bryce Wright singled, stole second base, advanced on a fly ball by Chas Rush and scored on an error.

The win makes Avella 6-1 in the section and 9-2 overall. The Eagles play a key series next week against Greensburg Central Catholic, which is unbeaten in section play.

Cam Ullom tossed three shutout innings of relief to get the win. He wiggled out of a jam in the sixth when Jeannette put its first three batters on base but a caught stealing helped end the threat.

Noah Kimberland hit a two-run single in the fifth inning that tied the score at 6-6. Kimberland had three RBI.

Jeannette’s Noah Rattigan hit a solo homer before play was suspended.

Trinity 5, Elizabeth Forward 3: Derek Falvo’s single with one out in the top of the seventh inning scored Jase Hartley and Owen Samogala to give Trinity a 5-3 win over Elizabeth Forward in a nonsection game.

EF (6-4) had tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Falvo had a big game, going 2-for-4 with four RBI. He had a two-run single in the third inning that gave Trinity (4-8) a 3-0 lead.

Luke Poland was the winning pitcher with two innings of relief. Garrett Stoy pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh for a save.

Beth-Center 5, Burgettstown 4: Jax Taylor hit a bases-loaded, three-run double that capped a four-run top of the seventh inning and gave Beth-Center a 5-4 win over Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 1 game that had been suspended because of rain on Tuesday.

Beth-Center (1-7, 1-8) trailed 4-1 entering the seventh and had not scored since the first inning. The Bulldogs had two runners on with two outs when consecutive walks forced in a run and set up Taylor’s game-winning hit.

Winning pitcher Brody Beabout, who threw a complete game, secured the win. He scattered seven hits that included a double and triple by Burgettstown’s Jayden Roach. Matthew Bredel had a double for the Blue Devils (2-4, 4-6).

Mt. Lebanon 6, Canon-McMillan 3: Canon-McMillan entered this week undefeated but the Big Macs dropped their first games and series of the year after falling to Mt. Lebanon 6-3 in a Class 6A Section 2.

Mt. Lebanon (3-3, 8-4) won with a four-run fifth inning and two insurance runs in the seventh. The Blue Devils won two of the three games in the series. Canon-McMillan falls to 7-2, 12-2.

Winning pitcher Graham Keen threw a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts. He did not walk a batter.

M.J. Maruschak and Sebastian Shulsky both had a double for C-M.

McGuffey 5, Carmichaels 2: McGuffey scored three runs, two on sacrifice flies, in the top of the first inning and went on to a 5-2 win over Carmichaels in nonsection play.

McGuffey pitchers Landon Hatfield and Logan Griffis combined on a five-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Carmichaels (5-6) closed to within 3-2 in the fourth inning, but McGuffey (4-7) pushed across two insurance runs in the sixth, one scoring on a bunt single by Griffis.

Sam Stout had an RBI double in the first inning for the Highlanders.

Allderdice 7, Washington 6: Allderdice loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh and scored on an error to beat visiting Washington 7-6 in a nonsection play.

It was one of four errors by Wash High (5-6) that led to four unearned runs for Allderdice (5-6).

The game was close throughout. Wash High led 6-4 before Allderdice scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score.

Caleb Patton had a three-hit game for the Prexies, Tristin Coney had a double and Isaac Charnik drove in a pair of runs.

Frazier 11, Monessen 3: Frazie made the most of only five hits and beat Monessen 11-3 in a nonsection game.

Monessen (0-10) committed six errors, walked eight Frazier batters and hit three.

Two Frazier pitchers combined on a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Yough 19, California 9: Yough scored in every inning and defeated host California 19-9 in a nonsection contest.

Nate Bell hit two doubles and drove in four runs to lead the way for Yough (7-3).

Kaden Weston had a big game for California (7-3), going 3-for-3 with two triples, three runs and four RBI. Logan Hartley and Chase Shemansky each had a double.
