High school baseball: Wolfe’s home run keeps Fort Cherry unbeaten in section

Tyler Wolfe hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving Fort Cherry a 3-2 baseball win over visiting Chartiers-Houston in Class 2A Section 1 on Monday.

The two teams play the second game of the series tonight at EQT Park.

The Rangers (7-0, 11-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season, Friday at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. The Bucs trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, when Blake Sweder led off with a double and Wolfe followed with his home run to center field.

Winning pitcher Dylan Lueck tossed a three-hitter and did not allow an earned run. He struck out eight and walked two.

Chartiers-Houston took a 2-1 lead by scoring a run in the top of the sixth.

Dominic Cumer and Brady Robaugh each doubled for C-H (5-3, 7-5).

California 11, Frazier 6: Weston Monticelli had three hits and scored four runs, and California used a fast start to beat host Frazier 11-6 in Class 2A Section 1.

The Trojans (7-0, 9-3) led 8-2 in the second inning. Winning pitcher Logan Hartley drove in three runs.

Tyler Morrison had three hits for Frazier (2-4, 6-6).

Burgettstown 4, Bentworth 1: Matthew Bredel threw a complete game with seven strikeouts, leading Burgettstown to a 4-1 win over Bentworth in Class 2A Section 1.

Burgettstown (3-4, 5-6) forged a 3-0 lead in the second inning and that was all the offense Bredel needed. Blake Neal drove in two runs.

Zeek Malanosky had two hits, including a double, to lead Bentworth (1-8, 2-9).

Greensburg Central Catholic 18, Avella 5: Tyler Samide homered, Nolan Sopko hit three of Greensburg Central Catholic’s seven doubles and the Centurions defeated host Avella 18-5 in a battle of the top two teams in Class A Section 1.

Carson Karmer went 4-for-4 and Anthony Grippo and Nino Ninemire each drove in four runs for GCC (6-0, 7-0).

Avella (7-2, 10-4) trailed by only 5-4 before GCC scored seven times in the sixth inning and added six more in the seventh.

Bryce Wright and Cam Ullom each had a double for the Eagles.

Ringgold 10, Uniontown 0: Anthony Koziel fired a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts, leading Ringgold to a 10-0 win over Uniontown in a five-inning Class 4A Section 2.

The win gave a huge boost to the playoff chances of Ringgold (4-5, 5-8).

Dylan Bartkus led the Ringgold offense, going 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI.

Jefferson-Morgan 17, Mapletown 0: Brayden Ellsworth fired a three-inning no-hitter, his second consecutive no-hitter, and Jefferson-Morgan gave its playoff hopes a boost with a 17-0 win in three innings over Mapletown in Class A Section 1.

Ellsworth walked one and struck out six.

The Rockets (5-4, 7-6) hit five doubles, including two each by John Woodward and Jaymison Robinson. Ellsworth had the other two-bagger.

Hempfield 6, Canon-McMillan 3: Hempfield took advantage of three Canon-McMillan errors to score three unearned runs and beat the Big Macs 6-3 in a Class 6A Section 2 game.

The loss, the third in four section games for Canon-McMillan, drops the Big Macs to 7-3 in the section and 12-3 overall. Canon-Mac already has clinched a playoff berth.

The Big Macs outhit Hempfield (3-4, 6-8) by a 9-6 margin. M.J. Maruschak was 3-for-4 and Nico Patragas had a double.

Seton LaSalle 4, Washington 1: Josh Burkholder and Conner Rothhaar hit solo home runs, Anthony Locastro struck out 14 and Seton LaSalle defeated Washington 4-1 in a Class 3A Section 4.

Locastro threw a three-hitter for the Rebels (8-1, 9-2), who have clinched a playoff berth.

Caleb Patton had a double for Wash High (3-4, 7-7).

Charleroi 9, Beth-Center 4: Charleroi scored seven runs over the first two innings and went on to a 9-4 win at Beth-Center in nonsection action.

Three Charleroi pitchers combined on a six-hitter with 15 strikeouts. Luke Henderson had three hits and scored twice for the Cougars.

Jeannette 15, West Greene 0: Amara Thomas went 3-for-4 with a double and six RBI, Wyatt Schaeffer threw a five-inning no-hitter and Jeannette beat West Greene 15-0 in five innings in Class A Section 1.

Eden Christian 10, Monessen 0: Three Eden Christian pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout of Monessen, 10-0, in Class A Section 3. The Warriors are in first place in the section at 7-0 and 9-3 overall.

Trinity 8, South Fayette 5: Jonah Williamson hit a three-run homer that capped Trinity’s seven-run second inning as the Hillers defeated South Fayette 8-5 in a Class 5A Section 2 game at Ross Memorial Park.

Trinity pitchers Karson Hathaway and Aaron Harshman combined on a six-hitter as the Hillers improved to 3-4 in the section and 6-7 overall.

South Fayette, which began the day in first place in the tightly packed section, dropped 6-3, 9-5. The Lions cut an 8-2 deficit to 8-4 in the seventh and had the bases loaded with no outs. Trinity, however, ended the game by getting a groundball double play that scored a run and an ensuing lineout.
