High school softball: West Greene gets big win at Jefferson-Morgan
West Greene kept its Class A Section 2 title hopes alive with a 10-1 win at Jefferson-Morgan on Monday.
The Pioneers improved to 7-2 in the section and 10-4 overall. J-M falls to 7-2, 10-3.
Winning pitcher Caitlin Whyte struck out four and overcame seven walks.
West Greene opened the scoring with a 4-run top of the first inning. Whyte, Kendra Tharp, Emmaline Beazell, and Josie Mason all singled to put the Pioneers up 2-0. Sammi Zimmerman plated two more runs with a two-out, two-run single.
West Greene tacked on two more runs in the 4th and stretched its lead to 8-0 in the sixth.
Katie Brudnock had a crisp single to plate the final 2 runs for West Greene.
Trinity 12, Bethel Park 5:
Maddie Ray and Kaylee Danneker combined on a five-hitter and Nina Christy went 3-for-3 as Trinity beat visiting Bethel Park 12-5 in Class 5A Section 4.
Denneker twirled the first three innings and did not allow an earned run. Ray finished with four innings of one-run ball. Ray helped her cause by going 2-for-3 with a triple.
Elora Friend also had a triple, and Emma Starr doubled and drove in a pair as Trinity improved to 7-3 in section and 12-3 overall.
Chartiers-Houston 19, Carlynton 0: Kiera Drilak and Seanna Riggle homered, Lauren Rush drove in four runs and Chartiers-Houston stayed undefeated Chartiers-Houston clinched at least a share of the Class 2A Section 3 title with a 19-0 win over Carlynton in three innings.
Taryne Drilak and Riggle combined on a one-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Bucs improved to 8-0 in the section and 14-0 overall.
Rush had a double, as did Brooklyn Hess, who drove in four runs and scored three times.
McGuffey 17, Steel Valley 2: Hannah Lesnock, the No. 9 hitter in McGuffey’s batting order, went 3-for-3 with a home run, double, seven RBI and three runs, powering the Highlanders to a 17-2 thumping of Steel Valley in Class 3A Section 3.
Maura Jonovich was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI, Sidney Dobrzynski indeed three RBI and winning pitcher Miley Main did not allow an earned run for McGuffey (6-2, 6-3).
Upper St. Clair 7, South Fayette 2: Brooklyn Kemp tossed a four-hitter and Upper St. Clair scored three runs in the seventh inning to finish off a 7-2 win at South Fayette in Class 5A Section 3.
South Fayette (6-4, 7-7) remains a half game behind first-place Montour in the section.
Mapletown 22, Avella 9: Mapletown scored nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to complete a 22-9 win over Avella in Class A Section 2.
Makenna Lotspeich had two doubles, scored four times and drove in five for Mapletown (2-8, 3-9). Winning pitcher Cora Roberts struck out 10.
Avella’s Paisley Downey struck out 12.
OLSH 5, Burgettstown 2: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart scored five runs over a two-inning stretch and pitcher Sophia Wasko made sure they were enough as the Chargers beat Burgettstown 5-2 and tightened the race for second place in Class 2A Section 3.
OLSH broke up a scoreless game by scoring three runs in the fourth inning and added two in the fifth. Wasko scattered eight hits as OLSH moved to 5-3 in the section and 6-5 overall. Burgettstown fell to 6-3, 7-5.
The Blue Devils’ Madelina Guiddy went 3-for-3 with a double.
Elizabeth Forward 13, Belle Vernon 5: Winning pitcher Berlyn Holibaugh hit two home runs, Addy Nigut added a grand slam and Elizabeth Forward won the outright Class 4A Section 2 title with a 13-5 win over Belle Vernon.
EF is 11-0 in section and 12-1 overall.
Ava Jones was 3-for-4 with a home run, double and four RBI for Belle Vernon (5-7, 7-8). Addyson Newman also had three hits.
South Park 13, Charleroi 0: Sydney Sekely fired a two-hit shutout as undefeated South Park blanked Charleroi 13-0 in five innings in Class 3A Section 3.
London Latorre homered and Sekely went 4-for-4 with a double and three runs as the Eagles improved to 9-0 in section and 12-0 overall.
Brownsville 9, California 0: Ava Clark fired a one-hit shutout with 17 strikeouts, leading Brownsville to a 9-0 win over California in Class 2A Section 4.
Jordyn Davis homered for Brownsville (5-3, 7-4).
California’s lone hit was a single by Mia Klein.
