High school baseball: McGuffey’s Griffis throws 1-hit shutout
Logan Griffis tossed a one-hit shutout, sparking McGuffey to a 7-0 win over Waynesburg in a Class 3A Section 4 game Tuesday that was played in Carmichaels.
Griffis walked one and struck out seven. The lone hit for Waynesburg was a single by C.J. Corwin to lead off the fourth inning.
Wyatt Hildreth drove in two runs for the Highlanders.
Both teams are 3-4 in section play.
California 9, Frazier 8: Parker Gillen scored from third base on an infield grounder in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving California a 9-8 win over Frazier in Class 2A Section 1.
The win keeps California unbeaten in the section at 8-0. The Trojans had to fight off a Frazier comeback as the Commodores scored five runs in the top of the seventh to tie.
Eli Carpenter led California the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Jefferson-Morgan 12, Mapletown 1: John Woodward hit a two-run homer, Drew Adams struck out 10 and Jefferson-Morgan defeated visiting Mapletown 12-1 in five innings in Class A Section 1.
J-M improves to 6-4 in the section. The Rockets have won six in a row and are in third place in the section.
Adams allowed four singles and one walk. He shut out Mapletown over the final four innings. Jaymison Robinson tripled and drove in three runs and Brayden Ellsworth doubled.
Bentworth 9, Burgettstown 8: Cameron Krejci tossed three innings of shutout relief and Bentworth rallied for six runs in the sixth inning to beat host Burgettstown 9-8 in Class 2A Section 1.
Clint Havanis had two hits and scored a run for Bentworth (2-8, 3-8).
Burgettstown (3-5, 5-7) had six extra-base hits, including a double and triple by Jayden Roach. Matthew Bredel was 3-for-4 with a double.
Greensburg Central Catholic 9, Avella 2: Greensburg Central Catholic moved closer to the Class A Section 1 title with a 9-2 victory over visiting Avella.
The Centurions (7-0, 8-0) used a pair of four-run innings to open an 8-1 lead. Alec Martin pitched six innings for the win.
Avella (7-3, 10-5) matched GCC with its nine hits. Bryce Wright and Cam Ullom each doubled.
South Fayette 11, Trinity 10: Cody Bungert homered, doubled and drove in six runs, leading South Fayette to a wild 11-10 win over visiting Trinity in a Class 5A Section 2 game.
The teams split the two-game series.
South Fayette (7-3, 10-5) led 7-3 before Trinity (3-5, 5-9) scored five times in the fifth to forge an 8-7 lead. The Lions regained the lead with four in the bottom of the inning, but Trinity scored twice in the seventh to make it a one-run game.
Ayvari Chandler hit a two-run homer for Trinity. Karson Hathaway and Jonah Williamson each drove in a pair.
Seton LaSalle 4, Washington 1: Michael Cejrowski struck out 13 over six innings, Brody Torchia hit a two-run homer and Seton laSalle won the outright Class 3A Section 4 title with a 4-1 win over Washington.
It was the second 4-1 win over the Prexies in as many days for Seton LaSalle (9-1, 10-2).
The game was tied 1-1 before the Rebels pushed across a run in the fifth inning and Torchia smacked his home run in the sixth.
Washington (3-5, 6-8) was held to two hits, including an RBI double by Isaac Charnik in the fourth.
Jeannette 9, West Greene 2: Jeannette broke open a close game by scoring six runs in the sixth inning and beat visiting West Greene 9-2 in Class A Section 1.
Jeannette led 3-2 before its big inning.
Ryan Shotts and Amari Thomas each hit two doubles for the Jayhawks, backing the pitching of Evyn Yargeau, who struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
Logan Shields had two hits and drove in a run for West Greene.
Eden Christian 15, Monessen 0: Class A Section 3 leader Eden Christian completed its sweep of Monessen by beating the Greyhounds 15-0 in three innings.
