High school softball: West Greene gives Simms his 300th career victory

Emmaline Beazell was on base four times and drove in three runs, helping West Greene to a 17-2 victory over host Avella in a Class A Section 2 softball game Tuesday that earned Pioneers coach Bill Simms his 300th career victory.

West Greene (8-2, 11-4) took advantage of 18 walks by Avella pitching.

West Greene was paced by Kendra Tharp’s three runs. Tharp, Caitlin Whyte, Rylee Yeager, and Madelyn Roberts each had 2 RBI.

Whyte was the winning pitcher, tossing a three-hitter.

Carmichaels 10, Charleroi 0: Bailey Barnyak twirled a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts, Kenlee Machesky drove in three runs and Carmichaels blanked visiting Charleroi 10-0 in a five-inning nonsection game.

Carys McConnell and Machesky, the Nos. 3 and 4 hitters in the Carmichaels lineup, went a combined 6-for-6 with five RBI and four extra-base hits. McConnell hits two triples and Machesky had a double and triple. Ke’Lani Chun hit a pair of doubles and Bentley Lukacs smacked a triple for the Mikes (9-3).

Charleroi (3-9) was held to one hit, a triple by Payton Huweart.

Canon-McMillan 11, Butler 1: Brooke Bumer struck out 10 and allowed only an unearned run as Canon-McMillan rolled over visiting Butler 11-1 in six innings in a Class 6A game.

Bummer allowed only five hits and had plenty of offensive support. Sophie Carl went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and Lyla Mowery hit two doubles and drove in three as the Big Macs moved to 5-6 in section and 6-6 overall.

University 4, Chartiers-Houston 3: University High out of Morgantown, W.Va., scored the game’s first three runs and held on to beat Chartiers-Houston 4-3 and hand the Bucs their first loss of the season.

University scored the game’s first run in the second inning and pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. C-H (14-1) closed to within 3-2 in the sixth on RBI hits by Sydney English and Sophia Robinson.

University scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a two-out double by Olivia Masoner.

C-H’s Lauren Rush led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run.

Frazier 13, Waynesburg 2: Emma Essington drove in five runs as Frazier moved above the .500 mark with a 13-2 win in six innings over Waynesburg in Class 2A Section 4.

Essington went 3-for-3 with a home run, and Emme Travalena also had three hits including one of Frazier’s five doubles. The Commodores are 5-4 in section and 7-6 overall.

Gina Tedrow homered and Madi Price had two hits for Waynesburg (3-5, 6-6).
