High school softball: Gonglik strikes out 17 as Bentworth stays unbeaten
Sydney Gonglik fired a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts as Bentworth slipped past host Waynesburg 2-1 in a Class 2A Section 4 softball game Wednesday.
The win keeps Bentworth undefeated at 7-0 in section and 12-0 overall. Waynesburg is 3-6, 6-7.
It was the second consecutive 2-1 win for Bentworth.
The Bearcats scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to forge a 2-0 lead, then had to shut down a Waynesburg comeback in the bottom of the seventh.
In the third, Gonglik doubled and scored on an error. In the fifth, three walks (one intentional) by Waynesburg pitcher Gina Tedrow loaded the bases and Gonglik was able to score from third base on a grounder by Nora Lindley.
Waynesburg used the only two walks issued by Gonglik to start a rally in the seventh. A sacrifice bunt and an error sent home Kolbi Ratoksa to make it a one-run game.
Tedrow struck out 10.
Carmichaels 14, Beth-Center 0: Bailey Barnyak fired a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and Carmichaels scored nine runs in the sixth inning to finish off a 14-0 victory over host Beth-Center in Class A Section 2.
The win moves Carmichaels to 7-1 in section and 10-3 overall.
Five different Carmichaels players had multiple RBIs. Barnyak, Carys McConnell, Kenlee Machesky, Giana Colarusso and Kaitlyn Kramer each drove in two runs. Machesky and Colarusso smacked triples.
The lone hit for B-C (3-6, 4-8) was a single by Bella Stepp.
Trinity 4, Baldwin 0: Maddie Ray was dominant from start to finish for Trinity as the Hillers won at Baldwin 4-0 in Class 5A Section 4.
Ray tossed a three-hitter and issued only one walk. She struck out 11 as Trinity improved to 8-3 in the section and 13-3 overall. The Hillers have won four in a row.
Alexa Zawacki provided the only offense Trinity would need when she hit a three-run homer in the second inning.
The Hillers were held to two hits by losing pitcher Melina Defelice, who struck out nine.
Charleroi 11-18, East Allegheny 1-4: Charleroi swept a Class 3A Section 3 doubleheader from East Allegheny, 11-1 and 18-4, both in five innings.
In the opener, winning pitcher Lyla Brunner threw a two-hitter and Calie Rotolo smacked two doubles to power the Cougars (4-6, 5-9).
Winning pitcher Ariahna Blouse twirled a three-hitter in the second game and led the Charleroi with a triple and two doubles. Jada Sheppick had a double and triple.
South Park 7, McGuffey 2: South Park wrapped up an undefeated Class 3A Section 4 slate by winning at McGuffey, 7-2.
The Eagles (10-0, 13-0) were locked in a 2-2 tie before scoring five runs in the sixth inning.
Winning pitcher Sydney Sekely struck out 14 and did not issue a walk.
Kali Franks hit a solo home run for McGuffey (6-3, 6-4) and Sidney Dobrzynski had a double.
South Park’s Grace Kempton hit a two-run homer.
Seneca Valley 3, Canon-McMillan 1: Winning pitcher Abby Kalkowski led off the top of the eighth inning with a home run and Seneca Valley tacked on an insurance run to beat Canon-McMillan 3-1 in a Class 6A game.
The game was a pitcher’s duel all the way as Kalkowski threw a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts.
Canon-McMillan (5-7, 6-7) scored in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Lyla Mowery to force extra innings.
Seneca Valley is in second place in the section at 9-2, 11-2.
Jefferson-Morgan 12, California 0: Winning pitcher Gabriella Marmie twirled a one-hit shutout and helped her cause by belting a three-run homer, powering Jefferson-Morgan to a 12-0 win over host California in nonsection action.
Marmie struck out eight and walked only one. Addyson Teagarden added three RBI for the Rockets (11-3).
Avonworth 8, South Fayette 5: Alexandra Eberhart struck out 12 and smacked a triple, sparking Avonworth to an 8-5 win over South Fayette in nonsection play.
Avonworth (8-5) scored four runs in the third inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit.
Monessen 10, Leechburg 7: Winning pitcher Joey Hurst tossed four innings of relief and drove in two runs as Monessen won at Leechburg 10-7 in Class A Section 3.
Mya Kelly had two RBI and scored three times for Monessen (3-4, 4-7).
Oakland Catholic 9, Ringgold 3: Oakland Catholic broke up a close game by scoring five runs in the fifth inning and beat visiting Ringgold 9-3 in Class 4A Section 2.
Oakland Catholic led 4-1 before its big inning.
Addy Allen had two hits, including a double for Ringgold. Alice Ramous also doubled.
Brownsville 3, Washington 2: Ava Clark struck out 14 and Brownsville scored the game’s first three runs before holding off Washington 3-2 in a key Class 2A Section 4 game.
The loss drops Wash High to 5-4 in section and 9-5 overall. Brownsville is 6-3, 8-4.
Clark threw a four-hitter. Wash High scored two runs in the fifth inning on a single by Mayaja Lee, cutting the Falcons’ lead to a single run.
