High school softball: Close wins net section titles for Bearcats, Mikes
Makayla Gonglik hit a two-out, two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning, giving Bentworth’s softball team a 4-2 win at Brownsville on Friday and the outright Class 2A Section 4 championship.
Bentworth is 8-0 in the section and 14-0 overall.
The game was tied 2-2 going to seventh when Lauren Lustik hit a one-out single. Sydney Gonglik followed with a walk. Following a strikeout, Makayla Gonglik hit her tiebreaking triple to center field.
Winning pitcher Sydney Gonglik allowed three hits and one earned run over 6.1 innings. Makayla Gonglik got the final two outs for a save.
Brownsville pitcher Ava Clark struck out 13. The Falcons fell to 6-4 in section and 8-5 overall.
Sydney Gonglik hit two doubles and Alexa Babirad smacked a two-bagger.
Carmichaels 3, Jefferson-Morgan 1: Carys McConnell hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, Bailey Baryak allowed only one unearned run and Carmichaels edged rival Jefferson-Morgan 3-1 to clinch at least a share of the Class A Section 2 championship.
Carmichaels is 8-1 in section with one game remaining. The Mikes are 11-3 overall. Jefferson finishes section play at 7-3, 11-4. West Greene has completed section play at 8-2. Carmichaels has one game remaining against Avella.
Jefferson-Morgan, which beat Carmichaels in its first meeting, took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Ava Wood’s sacrifice fly scored Robi Finley. Carmichaels tied it at 1-1 in the fourth as Kenlee Machesky’s sacrifice fly scored McConnell.
In the pivotal sixth inning, Barnyak led off with a single and courtesy runner Ainsley Simons advanced on a wild pitch. McConnell then singled up the middle to score Simons with the go-ahead run and McConnell ended up on second base on the throw to home plate.
Machensky then singled home McConnell with an insurance run.
Barnyak pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts. She issued one walk.
J-M’s Emilee Bazzoli also tossed a five-hitter. She struck out four and walked two.
Trinity 10, Bethel Park 1: Ally Krenzelak had four hits and winning pitcher Maddie Ray fired a four-hitter as Trinity rolled to a 10-1 win over Bethel Park in Class 5A Section 4.
Krenzelak went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Trinity offense. Ray helped her cause with a triple and two RBI. The Hillers scored eight runs in the third inning.
Ray struck out seven.
Hempfield 14, Canon-McMillan 1: Lauren Howard went 3-for-3 with a home run, powering Hempfield to a 14-1 win in five innings over Canon-McMillan in Class 6A.
Hempfield leads the section at 11-0 and 13-1.
Ella Berkebile hit a triple and double for the Spartans.
Canon-McMillan (5-8, 6-8) was held to five hits.
Frazier 17, California 0: Frazier rolled to a 17-0 win at California in Class 2A Section 4.
Morgan Fisher homered and Emme Travalena drove in five runs for the Commodores. Winning pitcher Addison Hiles threw a one-hitter.
South Side Beaver 15, Avella 0: South Side Beaver scored six runs in the first inning and went on to a 16-0 win over Avella in a nonsection game.
