High school baseball: Wash High walks off with wild win
Joe Wilson hit a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Will Callan and give Washington a wild 12-11 win over McGuffey in a Class 3A Section 4 game Monday at EQT Park.
Washington (4-5, 7-8) led 10-4 in the second inning. McGuffey (3-6, 5-9) battled back and tied the score at 11-11 by pushing across four runs in the top of the seventh on an inside-the-park grand slam by Wyatt Hildreth. Callan then led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and stole second base, setting up Wilson’s game-winning hit.
Zander Henderson and Jayden Hagan each had three hits for the Prexies. Hildreth finished with seven RBI.
Carmichaels 7, Avella 3: Three Carmichaels pitchers combined on a seven-hitter and the Mikes won at Avella 7-3 as the Mikes strengthened their postseason chances out of Class A Section 1.
Carmichaels took advantage of five errors by Avella (7-4, 10-6) to score five unearned runs.
The Mikes broke a 1-1 tie by scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Ryder Krieg hit a tiebreaking double.
Scottie Maskil pitched 5.1 innings for the win and struck out six.
Canon-McMillan 4, South Fayette 0: Matthew Kocan and Reed Wilharm combined on a one-hit shutout as Canon-McMillan blanked South Fayette 4-0 in a nonsection game.
Kocan fired six innings, striking out five and walking three. Wilharm pitched the seventh inning and notched a strikeout.
The lone hit for South Fayette (10-6) was a single by Ryan Speer.
Troy Stimpson drove in a run in a two-run first inning and added an RBI double in the second for the Big Macs (14-4).Massimo Falconi was the only player with more than one hit, going 2-for-2 with a run.
Charleroi 8, Brownsville 3: Three Charleroi pitchers combined on a three-hitter and the Cougars dominated the middle innings to beat Brownsville 8-3 in Class 3A Section 4.
After a scoreless first three innings, Charleroi scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Jake Corrin struck out seven for the Cougars.
Keystone Oaks 5, Waynesburg 4: Keystone Oaks overcame an early three-run deficit and edged visiting Waynesburg 5-4 in Class 3A Section 4.
Austin Surber had three hits and C.J. Cowin drove in two runs for Waynesburg, which led 3-0 in the first inning and 4-1 in the third. KO scored four times in the bottom of the third and two Golden Eagles pitchers shut out the Raiders the rest of the way.
Bentworth 4, Beth-Center 1: Andrew Strejck hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning, sending Bentworth to a 4-1 win over Beth-Center in Class 2A Section 1.
Strejck’s hit broke up a 1-1 tie and winning pitcher Sam Wade made it stand as he fired a two-hitter and struck out 10.
Bentworth is 3-8 in section and 4-10 overall. Beth-Center falls to 1-8, 1-11.
Burgettstown 1, Frazier 0: Jayden Roach pitched 6.2 shutout innings to lead Burgettstown (4-5, 6-8) to a 1-0 victory over Frazier (2-6, 6-8) in a Class 2A Section 1 game. Roach allowed five hits and struck out six. Matt Bredel came on in relief to record the final out of the game.
Burgettstown’s lone run came in the top of the first inning when Blake Neal hit an RBI single that scored Roach.
Greensburg Central Catholic 18, West Greene 0: Tyler Samide homered and pitched a four-inning no-hitter as undefeated Greensburg Central Catholic clinched at least a share of the Class A Section 1 title with an 18-0 win over West Greene.
Samide drove in five runs and Carson Karmer drove in four runs with three doubles.
Jeannette 16, Mapletown 0: Jayden Kennedy pitched a two-hit shutout and Evyn Yargeau drove in three runs as Jeannette defeated Mapletown 16-0 in a four-inning Class A Section 1 game.
Geibel Catholic 12, Monessen 8: Geibel Catholic forged an early eight-run lead and held off host Monessen, 12-8.
Zane Hixon had five RBi for Geibel, which led 10-2 in the third inning. Monessen battled back but couldn’t overcome its six errors.
