Peters Township broke open a close game by scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and beat Trinity 9-1 in a Class 5A Section 2 baseball game Tuesday night at Joe Maize Field.
The Indians (4-6, 8-9) and Hillers (4-6, 7-10) split their two-game series and are part of a three-way tie, along with Upper St. Clair, for fourth place and the final playoff berth out of the section with one week left in the season. USC has the tiebreaker advantage based upon their 4-0 record against PT and Trinity. All three teams have two section games remaining. Trinity plays a series against Moon, PT faces South Fayette and USC has Chartiers Valley.
Peters Township pitchers Charlie Taylor and Ryan Ververka combined on a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Jordan Haught hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning that gave Pt a 3-1 lead. Liam Wahl hit two doubles.
Ayvari Chandler had a double for Trinity.
McGuffey 5, Washington 4: Sam Stout hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning and Levi Young tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief as McGuffey edged Washington 5-4 in a Class 3A Section 4 game Tuesday night at EQT Park.
Both teams are 4-6 in the section and tied for fifth place, one game behind both Waynesburg and Keystone Oaks for the final playoff berth. McGuffey (6-9 overall) has a two-game series remaining with section champion Seton LaSalle and Wash High (7-9) plays a series against Keystone Oaks.
Young helped McGuffey at the plate with two singles. He scored two runs.
Will Callan had a double and Tristin Coney added two singles for Wash High.
Softball
Oakland Catholic 9, Ringgold 3: Addison Crummie had three hits, including a pair of doubles, as Oakland Catholic defeated Ringgold 9-3 in Class 4A Section 2 action Wednesday.
Winning pitcher Kennedy Waffensmith did not allow an earned run over five innings as Oakland Catholic improved to 3-9 in both section and overall.
Addy Allen hit a double and drove in a pair of runs for Ringgold, and Alice Ramous also had a two-bagger.
