Avella starts fast, routs Mapletown
MAPLETOWN – Chas Rush passed for a touchdown, ran for two others and caught a scoring pass as Avella opened its season by routing Mapletown 48-0 in a non-conference football game Friday night.
Rush opened the scoring only 18 seconds into the game when he caught a 67-yard pass from Johnny Urbana. Rush added a six-yard TD run later in the first quarter.
Darren Rushel’s eight-yard scoring jaunt put Avella up 20-0 in the second quarter and Rush scored again on a 30-yard run. Gage Samol, who ran for 135 yards on only five carries, added a 52-yard TD burst in the third quarter.
Rush threw a 68-yard TD pass to Caleb Amaismeier in the second quarter and Gavin Gatewood closed the scoring with an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Avella rushed for 313 yards. The Eagles’ defense held Mapletown to 62 net yards, including 44 on the ground. Avella threw only two passes in the game and both went for touchdowns.
