High school basketball: Fort Cherry clinches at least a share of title

Beth-Center's Violet Trump scored her 1,000th career point Monday night in a win over Bentworth.

Fort Cherry clinched at least a share of the Class 2A Section 2 girls basketball championship with an easy 77-21 victory at Northgate on Monday night.

The Rangers (8-0, 14-5) scored 54 first-half points and led by 44 at halftime, then held Northgate (1-7, 4-13) scoreless over the first eight minutes of the second half.

Brooke Conali led a balanced attack for FC by scoring 14 points. Allison Litman and Emily Pfender each netted 12.

Hope Stiteler scored 11 points for Northgate.

Beth-Center 52, Bentworth 46

Violet Trump scored 20 points, including her 1,000th career point, and also grabbed 16 rebounds in leading Beth-center to a 52-46 win over Bentworth in Class 2A Section 3.

The key to the game was the middle quarters, when Beth-Center (6-3, 10-9) turned a 12-12 tie into a 41-29 lead.

Bella Moyer’s 16 points were tops for Bentworth (3-5, 8-11) and Brielle Dillon scored 10.

South Fayette 65, Chartiers Valley 18

Juliette Leroux scored 17 points, Haylie Lamonde added 15, including her 1,000th career point, and defending PIAA champion South Fayette stretched its winning streak to 12 games with a 65-18 thumping of Chartiers Valley in Class 5A Section 3.

The Lions (12-0, 19-1), who already have clinched the section title, led 19-6 after one quarter and 44-8 at halftime.

Lailah Wright gave South Fayette a third player in double figures as she scored 11 points.

Chartiers Valley is 7-4 in section and 8-13 overall.

Washington 46, McGuffey 35

Olivia Woods scored 17 points and Washington gave its playoff hopes a huge boost with a 46-35 victory over McGuffey in a Class 3A Section 3 game at Wash High gymnasium.

Wash High (5-5, 10-8) rode a big first half to victory. The Prexies led 29-12 at halftime and held off a second-half comeback by McGuffey (7-4, 12-9).

Faith Partozoti chipped in with 11 points for the Prexies.

McGuffey’s Eliana Janovich scored 14 points.

Peters Township 46, Uniontown 40

Peters Township kept its playoff hopes alive by rallying in the fourth quarter to beat host Uniontown 46-40 in a Class 5A Section 4 game.

The win makes PT 5-6 in the section and 11-9 overall. Uniontown slips to 2-8, 9-10 and is eliminated from postseason contention.

Uniontown, however, held leads of 20-17 at halftime and 34-30 at the end of three quarters. Peters Township won the game via a 16-6 scoring edge in the pivotal fourth quarter.

Taylor McCullough led the Indians with a game-high 18 points, all coming after the first quarter. Alina Sopko followed with 14 points. Sopko scored eight of her points in the fourth quarter.

Aiera Jenkins had 17 points to lead Uniontown and Charley Murtha tossed in 11, all in the second half.

Trinity 52, Albert Gallatin 21

Sutton Williamson and Vitt Emerich combined for 31 points and six three-point field goals as Trinity steamrolled winless Albert Gallatin 52-21 in Class 5A Section 4.

The playoff-bound Hillers improved to 7-4 in section and 14-5 overall. AG is 0-12, 0-18.

Williams led Trinity with a game-high 17 points. Emerich followed with 14 points. Both players made three baskets from behind the three-point stripe.

Mikayla Shea netted 13 points for the Colonials.

Waynesburg 58, Keystone Oaks 55

Peyton Cowell had 19 points and Waynesburg used a three-point scoring edge in the fourth quarter to beat visiting Keystone Oaks 58-55 in a key Class 3A Section 3 game.

Waynesburg (9-2, 17-2) trailed 16-15 after one quarter but moved ahead 29-24 at halftime. KO tied the score at 48-48 at the end of three quarters, but Waynesburg won with a 10-7 scoring edge in the final period.

Tess Pauley scored 14 points and Addonae Johnson chipped in with 11 for Waynesburg.

Kailyn Brannon tallied a game-high 21 points for KO (5-5, 10-8). Hannah York and Natalee Tortorella each had 16 but the remainder of the Golden Eagles’ roster netted only two points.

Chartiers-Houston 49, Carmichaels 27

Class 2A Section 3 leader Chartiers-Houston cruised to a 51-12 home-court victory over Carmichaels.

The win sets up a game tonight at second-place California.

The Bucs (8-0, 16-3) led 19-4 after one quarter and 41-9 at halftime.

Ali Wingard led the C-H attack with 17 points and Ava Kolovich followed with 12.

Carmichaels is 0-8 in section and 1-18 overall.

California 54, Jefferson-Morgan 26

Lila Mitchell and Hayley Gibson combined for 41 points, sparking California to a 54-26 road win over Jefferson-Morgan in Class 2A Section 3.

The Trojans (7-1, 10-8) started fast and led 30-11 at halftime.

Mitchell led California with 25 points and Gibson finished with 16.

Brelynn Wood led J-M with 13 points.

Serra Catholic 71, West Greene 35

Serra Catholic made 10 three-point field goals, including four by Niki Safanos, as the Eagles defeated visiting West Greene 71-36 in a Class A Section 2 game matching playoff-bound teams.

Stefano scored 19 points, which was equaled by teammate Bella Dumbroski, as Serra improved to 10-1 in section and 12-5 overall. West Greene is 8-4, 13-6.

Lexi Pearce and Abby Genes each tossed in 13 points for the Eagles.

Kendra Tharp was the only player to score in double figures for West Greene. She finished with 10 points.

Belle Vernon 58, Mount Pleasant 26

Class 4A Section 3 leader Belle Vernon clinched at least a share of the title with a 58-26 win over Mount Pleasant on the Leopards’ home court.

Lyla McConnell and Aubrey Brown each scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack for Belle Vernon (12-1, 18-3). Brown also had a team-high eight rebounds.

Raleigh Drzal netted 10 points for Mount Pleasant (6-7, 9-11).

Geibel Catholic 76, Monessen 21

Emma Larkin and Mallory Clemmer each scored 23 points as undefeated Geibel Catholic won at Monessen 76-21 in a Class A Section 2 game.

The Gators improved to 12-0 in section and 19-0 overall. Monessen is 5-6, 7-10.

Boys Results

Charleroi 67, Waynesburg 53

Charleroi moved ahead of Waynesburg and into sole possession of third place in Class 3A Section 4 with a 67-53 victory over the visiting Raiders.

After the first quarter ended in an 11-11 stalemate, Charleroi (5-3, 11-9) scored 26 points in the second stanza to take control of the game at 37-24. Charleroi’s Mikey Lee had four key steals in the Cougars’ big second quarter.

Xavion Thomas again led the Cougars in scoring with 16 points. Jackson Kernako was the only other Charleroi player to finish in double figures. He scored 11 points.

Cole Headlee scored a game-high 21 points for Waynesburg (4-4, 6-12). Austin Surber and Jackson Dean each tossed in 12.

Bentworth 41, Greensburg Central Catholic 33

Ben Hays poured in a game-high 21 points and Bentworth created some separation with Greensburg Central Catholic in the Class 2A Section 1 standings with a 41-33 victory over the Centurions.

Bentworth (7-4, 12-5) led 21-16 at halftime and stretched the advantage to 35-22 after three quarters. GCC (5-7, 5-14) held Bentworth to six points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t generate enough offense to fuel a comeback.

Ryan Moessner added 11 points to the Bentworth cause.

GCC was led in scoring by Luke Semelka’s 12 points.
