O-R Athlete of the Week: Bri Morreale, Peters Township
Name: Bri Morreale
Grade: Senior
School: Peters Township
Sport: Basketball
Morreale’s week: After making more than 200 three-pointers in her career, it was fitting that Morreale achieved 1,000 points by sinking a shot from beyond the arc in a 52-48 win against Trinity last Wednesday.
She pointed out that it was a banked-in three, but it counted just the same as the rest and allowed for a celebratory moment of achieving a longtime goal.
“It’s kind of a reward and shows that all the hard work I put in has paid off,” Morreale said about getting to 1,000 points. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my teammates and coaches, and it happened in a game where we got our first big section win on top of it. That was even more important to me that we got the win over Trinity.”
After the game, Morreale celebrated with teammates. She has one sister, Ashlyn, on the team and another that’s in eighth grade.
“I hope that I’ve set a good example for them,” Morreale said. “I really love my sisters.”
It was a big week for Peters Township basketball. Dylan Donovan broke the boys basketball all-time scoring record in a win over South Fayette Friday.
Elite company: Morreale became the seventh girls player since 2000 to achieve 1,000 career points at Peters Township. The others are Natalie Wetzel, Gemma Walker, Journey Thompson, Makenna Marisa, Madison Kerr and Emily Correal. Two of them – Marisa and Correal – played professionally and all of them played collegiately.
“It means a lot, because I played with Nat (Wetzel) and Gemma, so seeing all of their hard work really influenced me,” Morreale said. “Playing with them was such a great experience. Obviously, they’re doing well in college and are going to go on to do great things. It’s really nice to see the hard work that I put in with them pay off and it kind of shows me that the future is really bright for me.”
W&J bound: Morreale will keep the tradition of Peters Township 1,000 point scorers going on to play collegiately. She’s headed to Washington & Jefferson and plans to study Chemical Engineering, which is a perfect fit for her love of math and science.
“I’ll do math problems in my free time, that’s how much I love doing math,” Morreale said. “I’m a bit of a nerd, but I love math and science. My dad is a chemical engineer. I enjoy watching what he does, so I’m hoping that one day I can do something similar to him.”
Hobbies: When Morreale isn’t playing basketball she has a couple of things she enjoys doing in her spare time. One is baking and the other is watching true crime documentaries on Netflix.
“I really enjoy making brownies and cookies,” Morreale said. “I also love true crime shows. They’re my favorite. Really any of the documentaries on Netflix are great. Probably my favorite one is His & Hers. It just came out and it’s really good.”
