Girls basketball: Chartiers-Houston finishes perfect in section

The Chartiers-Houston girls basketball team capped off an undefeated Class 2A Section 3 season with a 63-36 win at Bentworth on jThursday night.

Ava Kolovich led four Bucs (10-0, 18-3) in double figures with 18 points. Ali Wingard finished with 17 points and Mackenzie Walsh and Hannah Russell scored 10 each.

Bella Moyer led Bentworth (4-6, 9-12) with 13 points and Alexa Babirad netted 12.

Belle Vernon 64, Southmoreland 17: Aubrey Brown scored a season-high 19 points, Lyla McConnell added 14 and Belle Vernon won the outright Class 4A Section 3 championship by routing host Southmoreland, 64-17.

The Leopards (13-1, 19-3) were in control from the opening tip and led 52-10 at halftime.

Southmoreland finished 0-14 in section and 1-21 overall.

Keystone Oaks 48, Washington 38: Washington finished Class 3A Section 3 play one victory shy of the postseason.

Hannah York scored 23 points and host Keystone Oaks defeated Wash High, 48-38. The Prexies needed a victory to qualify for the playoffs. They finish at 5-7 in the section and are 10-10 overall with two non-league games remaining.

KO (7-5, 12-8) used a 10-0 run in the first quarter to forge a 17-8 lead after the opening eight minutes. The Golden Eagles were able to add to that advantage in each of the next two quarters before Wash High mounted a comeback in the fourth but was unable to get the deficit down to a single possession.

York scored 12 of her points on free throws. Kaylin Brannen had 14 points for the Golden Eagles with 11 coming in the first half.

Olivia Woods kept Wash High within striking distance by scoring 20 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 56, Carmichaels 33: Jefferson-Morgan broke open a close game by scoring 25 points in the fourth quarter and winning 56-33 at Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 3.

Jefferson-Morgan (2-8, 9-13) led 22-16 at halftime and 31-25 at the end of three quarters. The Rockets outscored Carmichaels 25-8 in the pivotal fourth quarter.

Ava Wood led J-M in scoring with a game-high 20 points.

Joselyn Carter tossed in 10 for Carmichaels (0-10, 1-20).

West Greene 57, Avella 33: Led by a double-double from Kendra Tharp, West Greene pulled away from Avella in the second half to secure a 57-33 win in a Class A Section 2 game.

Tharp had 14 points and 19 rebounds for the Pioneers, who outscored the Eagles 39-19 in the second half. Sammi Zimmerman added 13 points for West Greene (10-4, 15-6).

Avella (1-11, 4-16) was paced by Haleigh Rush, who scored 11points and Dakota McCullough, who chipped in 10 points.

Seton LaSalle 56, McGuffey 32: Seton LaSalle held host McGuffey to eight points in the first half and went on to a 56-32 victory that clinched the outright Class 3A Section 3 title for the Rebels.

Ava Maroney scored 14 points and Addy Dears had 13 for Seton LaSalle (11-1, 14-7), which led 32-8 at halftime.

Mykenna Meighen scored 11 points and Maura Janovich followed with 10 for playoff-bound McGuffey (7-5, 12-10).

Clairton 43, Monessen 36: Karma Fuqua had a game-high 21 points to help Clairton edge Monessen 43-36 in Class A Section 2.

Jamiya Brownfield added 11 points for the Bears (5-9, 4-10).

Na’Jaziah Carter led Monessen (5-8, 7-12) with 18 points.

Monessen has a game tonight with Serra Catholic. If the Greyhounds win they knock Clairton out, but if they lose both teams tie for the fifth and final playoff spot and they split in the regular season.

Waynesburg 46, Charleroi 31: Waynesburg started strong and finished strong, scoring 18 points in the first and fourth quarters to secure a 46-31 win over Charleroi (1-11, 5-15).

The Raiders (10-2, 19-2) extended their winning streak to nine games and finished second place in Class 3A Section 3. Peyton Cowell had 14 points and Emma Blair scored 10.

Anna Kondratowicz paced the Cougars with 10 points.

Mount Pleasant 42, Ringgold 29: Ryleigh Drzal and Addy Cole each scored 11 points as Mount Pleasant beat visiting Ringgold 42-29 in a Class 4A Section 3 game.

The loss knocked Ringgold (5-9, 8-12) out of playoff contention. Mount Pleasant (7-7, 10-11) has qualified for the postseason.

Ringgold led 23-17 at halftime but scored only six points in the second half.

Bishop Canevin 47, Mapletown 20: Kya Cooley led Bishop Canevin (8-6, 9-11) with 20 points in a 47-20 win over Mapletown (1-13, 2-20) in Class A Section 2.

Isabella Sysak added 17 points for the Crusaders, who raced out to an 18-2 first quarter lead.

Burgettstown 50, Carlynton 34: Paige Klodowski had 19 points to pace Burgettstown (7-3, 16-6) in a 50-34 win at Class 2A Section 2 foe Carlynton (0-10, 5-15).

Savanna Rush and Emily Harrison added 10 points each for the Blue Devils, who put the game away with an 18-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Cydney McClendon had 14 points for the Cougars.

Fort Cherry 75, South Side Beaver 19:

There no doubt about how Class 2A Section 2 champion Fort Cherry’s game against visiting South Side Beaver was going to turn out. The Rangers left no doubt by racing out ot a 35-point lead in the first quarter before cruising to a 75-19 victory.

The Rangers finished 10-0 in the section and are 16-5 overall.

Fort Cherry led SSB (6-4, 9-12) 36-1 at the end of the first quarter and 46-2 at halftime.

Brooke Cornali fired in a career-high 32 points to lead the Rangers’ attack. Bella Bianchini tossed in 14 points and Emily Pfender had 12.
