High school basketball: C-M girls win outright title; PT makes playoffs
Madison Clair scored 14 points, Sam Miller added 11 and the Canon-McMillan girls won the Class 6A Section 2 championship outright with a 58-29 thumping of visiting Connellsville on Friday night.
Twelve Big Macs scored in the game. Canon-McMillan, which won the second section championship in program history, led 18-6 after one quarter and 36-13 at halftime. The Big Macs, who could gain the No. 1 seed in the Class 6A playoffs, went 9-1 in the section and are 17-4 overall.
Natalie Jacobs scored 14 points for Connellsville (1-9, 5-16).
Peters Township 31, Bethel Park 25
Peters Township overcame being held scoreless for a stretch of more than 11 minutes and battled back to beat visiting Bethel Park 31-25 in a Class 5A Section 3 game.
The win clinches a postseason berth for the Indians (6-6, 12-9), who are the defending WPIAL champions. The loss knocked Bethel Park (5-7, 11-10) out of playoff contention.
PT led 12-6 after one quarter, then was held scoreless until 5:03 remained in the third quarter. Bethel Park moved ahead, 16-12, at halftime and led 22-17 at the end of the third quarter. PT moved ahead midway through the fourth quarter and never trailed again.
Jordyn Welsh was the lone PT player to score in double figures as she tossed in a game-high 12 points.
Bethel Park was hurt by free-throw shooting, making only four of 11 attempts. Naiya Turner’s 10 points were tops for the Black Hawks.
Fort Cherry 75, South Side Beaver 19
There was no mystery about how Class 2A Section 2 champion Fort Cherry’s game against visiting South Side Beaver was going to turn out. The Rangers left no doubt by racing out to a 35-point lead in the first quarter before cruising to a 75-19 victory on Thursday.
The Rangers finished 10-0 in the section and are 16-5 overall.
Fort Cherry led South Side (6-4, 9-12) by a whopping 36-1 margin at the end of the first quarter and 46-2 at halftime.
Brooke Cornali fired in a career-high 32 points to lead the Rangers’ attack. Bella Bianchini tossed in 14 points and Emily Pfender had 12.
Boys results
Ringgold 72, Trinity 60
Ringgold clinched a berth in the Class 4A playoffs by defeating Trinity 72-60 in a Section 3 game.
The Rams (5-7, 12-9) did it by overcoming an early deficit. Trinity (2-10, 4-16) led 20-13 after one quarter before Ringgold’s offense took over. The Rams led 38-34 at halftime and moved out to a 58-45 lead at the end of three quarters.
Takeo Tolliver did much of the damage for Ringgold by scoring 26 points. Demetri Lowe followed with 12 points and Dennis Hawkins had 11.
Trinity’s Jonah Williamson pumped in a game-high 28 points. Ian Migyanko and Sam Johnson each scored 10.
Charleroi 83, Ligonier Valley 76
Jackson Keranko pumped in a season-high 30 points and Charleroi outgunned host Ligonier Valley 83-76 in Class 3A Section 4.
The win gives Charleroi (7-3, 13-9) a second-place finish in the second. Ligonier Valley (6-4, 11-10) finishes in third place.
The game was close throughout but the key quarter was the first, when Charleroi bloated to a 21-16 lead that had Ligonier Valley playing catch-up the rest of the way. Charleroi led 43-36 at halftime and 63-56 after three quarters.
Charleroi’s Xavion Thomas joined Keranko in double figures with 14 points.
Ligonier Valley’s Mike Wisniewski matched Kernako for game scoring honors by dropping in 30 points, which included five three-point baskets. Michael Vargulish-Graver added 26 points.
Mount Pleasant 71, Waynesburg 57
Mount Pleasant will not be advancing to the postseason but the Vikings did upset playoff-bound Waynesburg, 71-57, in a Class 3A Section 4 game.
Waynesburg (4-6, 6-14) led 35-34 at halftime but Mount Pleasant (2-8, 6-16) scored 19 points in each of the two remaining quarters and held the Raiders to 22 points after intermission.
The Vikings won with long-range shooting, making 12 three-pointers. Ray Arrigo scored a career-high 19 points off the bench, Jordan Grieff added 15 and Andrew Brodak had 11.
Dane Woods pumped in a game-high 29 points for Waynesburg and Cole Headlee netted 10.
Beaver County Christian 46, Avella 39
Avella’s chances of winning the Class A Section 1 championship ended with a stunning 46-39 loss at Beaver County Christian.
BCC (2-8, 5-14) led 15-14 at halftime and 29-26 at the end of three quarters. Avella (7-3, 17-5) was unable to fuel a late comeback as BCC outscored the Eagles 17-13 in the fourth quarter.
Ethan Schmidt pumped in a game-high 25 points for the winners.
Cam Ullom netted 13 points to lead Avella and Nate Cilia had 12.
Bentworth 50, Frazier 18
Playoff-bound Bentworth got defensive and routed host Frazier, 50-18 in Class 2A Section 1.
The Bearcats (9-5, 14-6) didn’t allow more than six points in any quarter.
Ben Hays led the Bentworth offense with 15 points, Ryan Moessner had 12 and Levi Urcho tallied 11.
Kolby Stewart led Frazier (3-10, 7-13) with 12 points.
Peters Township 84, Bethel Park 54
Dylan Donovan led five Peters Township players in double figures with 26 points as the Indians defeated visiting Bethel Park 84-54 in Class 5A Section 3.
The Indians (10-2, 16-5) scored 51 points in the second half after leading 33-30 at intermission.
Xavier Knox scored 16 points, Jake Wetzel had 13, Jayden Greco 12 and Daniel Dudek 11.
Monessen 57, Geibel Catholic 47
Rodney Johnson scored 17 points, Tayvin Craggette added 16 and Monessen used a strong fourth quarter to beat visiting Geibel Catholic 57-47 in Class A Section 2.
Monessen (6-4, 11-8) led 20-8 after the first quarter but Geibel (3-6, 10-11) closed to within 38-34 entering the final period. Monessen won with a 19-13 scoring edge over the last eight minutes.
Kayden Kolbeck scored 10 points for the Greyhounds, who are in the WPIAL playoffs for the 45th consecutive season.
Geibel was led in scoring by Eahn Stevenson’s 16 points.
Fort Cherry 84, Carmichaels 30
Kolton Smith led three Rangers in double figures with 19 points in a 84-30 victory at Carmichaels (3-11, 4-16) in Class 2A Section 3 Thursday night.
Gavin Grace added 17 points for Fort Cherry (10-4, 12-8) and Connor Vansickle scored 11.
Steve Lewis netted 10 points for the Mikes.
Washington-McGuffey postponed
The key Class 3A Section 2 boys game between Washington and McGuffey was postponed Friday. It has been rescheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at McGuffey. The Highlanders (3-6, 11-10) must win the game to qualify for the playoffs. Wash High (4-5, 10-10) has clinched a playoff berth.
