High school basketball: Trinity girls win playoff tuneup
The Trinity girls basketball team had a pair of players record double-doubles in its playoff tuneup.
Sutton Williamson had 15 points and 10 assists and Bently Layhue recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Hillers downed Seton LaSalle, 67-47, Monday night.
Gabby Humphreys added 14 points for the Hillers and Kimari Behrens had 10 points and five steals.
The Hillers concluded the regular season with a 16-6 record.
Ava Maroney had 20 points for the Rebels (14-8).
Waynesburg 52, California 38
Waynesburg prepared for the upcoming WPIAL Class 3A playoffs with a road win over Class 2A California, 52-28.
Tess Pauley pumped in a game-high 24 points for Waynesburg, which ended the regular season with a 20-2 record. After the first quarter ended in an 11-1 stalemate, the Raiders outscored California (11-10) in each of the next three quarters.
Peyton Cowell also scored in double figures for Waynesburg. She had 12 points.
Lila Mitchell led California with 17 points and Hayley Gibson had 10. The Trojans hurt their comeback chances by making only three of 13 free-throw attempts. The Trojans have clinched a berth in the Class 2A playoffs.
Peters Township 53, Mt. Lebanon 26
Peters Township held Mt. Lebanon to single digits in all four quarters on its way to a 53-26 win in a battle of two playoff teams.
Bri Morreale led the Indians with 12 points and Taylor McCullough scored 11. The Indians (13-9) led Mt. Lebanon, 30-12 at halftime.
Rylee Hall had six points for the Blue Devils (6-15).
Washington 47, Monessen 36
Olivia Woods scored a game-high 22 points as Wash High (11-10) concluded its season with a 47-36 win at playoff-bound Monessen (7-14).
The Prexies used an 18-4 advantage in the third quarter to take control.
Na’Jaziah Carter scored 16 points for the Greyhounds and Madison Johnson chipped in 12.
West Greene 52, Bentworth 36
West Greene tuned for the upcoming playoffs by beating host Bentworth, 52-36, in non-section play.
Kendra Tharp scored 11 points and grabbed 23 rebounds, including the 1,000th of her career, while three other West Greene players scored in double figures. Jillisa Yeater’s 12 points were tops in their Pioneers’ balanced offense. Sammie Zimmerman netted 11 points and Madelyn Roberts had 10.
Bella Moyer (11 points) and Brielle Dillon (10) scored in double figures for Bentworth.
Uniontown 78, Beth-Center 27
Lyric McLee and Aiorra Jenkins each scored 20 points, sparking Class 5A Uniontown to a 78-27 victory over Class 2A Beth-Center in the regular-season finale.
Uniontown led 16-10 after one quarter and moved out to a commanding 44-21 halftime advantage.
Violet Trump had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds for Beth-Center (10-11).
Boys results
Washington 40, Monessen 34
Will Callan scored 13 points to help Washington edge Monessen in a battle between two playoff teams.
The Prexies (12-10) led 21-7 at halftime.
Rodney Johnson had a game-high 14 points for the Greyhounds (11-9) and Tayvin Craggette scored 10.
Fort Cherry 75, Cornell 41
Fort Cherry put five players in double figures and the playoff-bound Rangers won their regular-season finale, 75-41, over Cornell.
Gavin Grace led the balanced attack for Fort Cherry with 16 points. Jordan Bianchini followed with 14, Connor Vansickle and Landon Trnavsky each netted 12 and Kolton Smith had 10. Tyler Wolfe grabbed 10 rebounds. The Rangers scored 40 points in the first half and took a 21-point lead into the intermission.
Eduardo Benitez scored a game-high 20 points for Cornell.
Jefferson-Morgan 49, Brownsville 26
Jeremiah Robertson had another big scoring game, pouring in 26 points, and Jefferson-Morgan held visiting Brownsville scoreless in the third quarter en route to a 49-26 victory.
Jefferson-Morgan (21-1) led 34-19 at halftime, then outscored BRownsville (2-18) 4-0 in the third quarter.
Upper St. Clair 77, Trinity 43
Jake Foster led four Upper St. Clair players in double figures with 25 points and the Panthers scored 41 points in the opening quarter en route to a 77-43 victory over visiting Trinity.
Foster made five three-point field goals in the game and helped USC (21-1), the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 6A playoffs, move out to a 41-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Ryan Robbins added 15 points, and Luke Marchinsky and Andrew Gaither each netted 11 for USC.
Sam Johnson was the leading scorer for Trinity (4-18) with 12 points. Jonah Williams finished with 11.
Waynesburg 76, Aquinas Academy 74
Waynesburg rallied in the fourth quarter and defeated visiting Aquinas Academy, 76-74.
The Raiders trailed 38-35 at halftime and 58-54 at the end of the third quarter. Waynesburg won with a 22-16 scoring edge in the final period.
Much of Waynesburg’s scoring came from two players. Dane Woods had a double-double of 30 points and 18 rebounds. Cole Headlee added 20 points.
Aquinas Academy’s Sam Duer scored a game-high 37 points.
Ringgold 72, Montour 60
Dennis Hawkins scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, powering Ringgold to a 72-60 victory over visiting Montour in the regular-season finale.
The Rams (13-9), who will open playoff action Thursday night, took control against Montour (8-14) in the first half and led 34-18 at the intermission. Takeo Tolliver chipped in with 18 points for the Rams.
Mt. Lebanon 57, Peters Township 43
Liam Sheely poured in a game-high 23 points as Mt. Lebanon defeated Peters Township, 57-43.
Jayden Greco scored 13 points and Dylan Donovan added 11 for PT, which fell behind 32-18 at halftime.
Bentworth-West Greene canceled
The Bentworth at West Greene boys game scheduled for Monday night was canceled. The Bearcats and Pioneers will meet in the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs on Thursday in Bentleyville.
