High school basketball: Peters Township girls knock off No. 5 seed

Peters Township’s late-season surge continues.
Sophomore guard Taylor McCullough scored 17 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, as Peters Township’s girls basketball team won at Section 1 champion Plum 56-46 in a WPIAL Class 5A playoff game Friday night.
It was the fifth consecutive year Peters Township won its opening playoff game. The defending champion Indians (14-9) also clinched a berth in the PIAA tournament.
The Indians led almost the entire game. PT was up 12-10 at the end of the first quarter and used a key stretch in the second quarter to break open the contest. McCullough converted an old-fashioned three-point play and teammate Maddyn Mele sank a three-point field goal that pushed the lead to double figures. PT led 24-17 at halftime.
Plum closed to within two points in the third quarter but PT moved back out to a 42-33 lead after three quarters.
Bri Morreale and Jordyn Welsh each tossed in 13 points for the Indians and Alina Sopko scored 10.
Riley Stephens scored a game-high 21 points for Plum (18-5), which was the No. 5 seed.
Peters Township, which is the defending WPIAL champion, will play in the quarterfinals Wednesday against either Chartiers Valley or fourth-seeded Baldwin.
South Fayette 78, Kiski 19: The postseason looked a lot like the regular season for South Fayette.
The defending state champion Lions put together another dominant performance in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs, trouncing Kiski, 78-19.
The top-seeded Lions (22-1) led 25-3 after one quarter, 48-4 at halftime and 67-6 at the end of three quarters.
Haylie Lamonde led the Lions with 18 points and Juliette Leroux had 16.
South Fayette advances to the quarterfinals Wednesday against Trinity.
Kiski ends the season with an 11-1 record.
OLSH 54, McGuffey 20: Lola Gardner scored 17 and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart shut out McGuffey in two of the four quarters en route to a 54-20 victory in a Class 3A first-round game.
McGuffey (12-11) played well in the first quarter and trailed by only two points, 17-15. But sixth-seeded OLSH (18-5) outscored the Highlanders 21-0 in the pivotal second quarter to take a commanding 38-15 lead into halftime.
OLSH led 48-20 after three quarters and shut out McGuffey 6-0 in the fourth quarter.
The Chargers advance to the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Belle Vernon 60, Burrell 45: Belle Vernon used a 9-0 run midway through the first quarter and its defense suffocated Burrell’s offense in a 60-45 victory in the first round of the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs.
The Leopards (14-9) advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinals against top-seed Quaker Valley (18-3). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Buccaneers’ season comes to an end at 10-13.
Belle Vernon had a 6-5 lead early in the opening period before Cam Jenko put in a field goal for two of his 10 points and Elijah Majors connected on a three-pointer for an 11-5 advantage, and A.J. Watson fired a pass inside to Jenko to increase the home team’s lead to 13-5 with 3:46 remaining in the quarter. Jenko, who had nine points in the first period, converted on a layup following a steal for a 15-5 advantage at 2:25 of the opening frame.
The Leopards closed out the quarter, 5-4, for a 20-9 lead. Belle Vernon outscored Burrell, 13-5, in the second period for a 33-14 halftime cushion.
The Buccaneers opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 33-20, but the Leopards responded with six straight points on back-to-back layups from Watson and a Dane Daugherty field goal.
The home team had a 15-12 edge in the third, while the visitors had a 19-12 advantage in the final frame.
Watson and Burrell’s Ryan Wass scored 12 points apiece to lead their teams. The Bucs’ Sam Conte dropped 10.
Belle Vernon’s Luca Ghilani was in double figures with 10 points.
