McGuffey has 4 champions at Class 2A sectional
BURGETTSTOWN – District semifinalist McGuffey had four champions Saturday at the Class 2A South Section wrestling tournament held at Burgettstown High School.
Nine McGuffey wrestlers advanced to the WPIAL Championships that will be held at Chartiers Valley High School beginning Friday. Burgettstown advanced the most wrestlers. The Blue Devils will be sending 10 to the district meet.
McGuffey’s Clayton Ealy (127 pounds), Lucas Barr (133), Emmett Wolfe (149) and Aaron Supler (172) won section titles and Victor Bonus placed second at 152.
Burgettstown had only one section champion, Gage Bradley at 121, but Cole Baker (107), Daniel Smith (127) and Adam Balog (215) had runner-up finishes.
Malachi Peak (189) and Noah Layhue (215) gave Beth-Center back-to-back champions while the Bulldogs’ Alex Medlen (121) and Mason Wright (139) placed second.
Bentworth produced three section winners: Bobby Lemley (144), Drake McClure (139) and Owen Ivcic (160). Jefferson-Morgan’s Bayden Hanning won the 107-pound title and Colin White of West Greene won at heavyweight.Whyte won his second section championship with a fall in 3:25. He has passed his uncle, Shawn Whyte, for the school record in career wins with 152. Shawn, who is an assistant for the Pioneers, set the mark in 1998 with 148 victories.
J-M’s Caleb Dulaney (114) and Alek Palko (160) each placed second, as did Washington’s Caleb Patton (145) and heavyweight Joe Wilson, along with West Greene’s Noah Collins (133).
Chartiers-Houston advanced seven wrestlers despite not having one reach the finals, Avella moved on two, Bentworth, Beth-Center and Jefferson-Morgan six each, Washington four, and Fort Cherry and West Greene each advanced two.
