High school basketball: West Greene overcomes slow start, advances

Madelyn Roberts scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half as host West Greene knocked off Clairton for the third time this season, 50-21, in a WPIAL Class A first-round girls basketball playoff game Monday night.

The sixth-seeded Pioneers (17-6), who have won at least one playoff game in nine of the last 10 years, advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals at No. 3 Union (18-4), which received a first-round bye. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

Clairton (8-11) hung tough in the first half and trailed just 14-10 at intermission, but the Pioneers out-scored the Bears 23-8 in the third quarter to go up 37-18 and pulled away from there.

Samantha Zimmerman added nine points for West Greene.

Karma Fuqua led Clairton with eight points.

The Pioneers defeated the Bears twice during Class A, Section 2 play, 53-17 at Clairton and 46-27 at West Greene.

Belle Vernon 85, Lincoln Park 62: Belle Vernon took advantage of turnovers and second-chance points in a 85-62 victory over visiting Lincoln Park in the first round of the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs.

The Leopards (20-3), who won their 14th straight game, will play Elizabeth Forward (16-6) in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Belle Vernon played the Warriors twice this season in Class 4A Section 3 play and won both games by scores of 70-56 and 55-53.

The Leopards had a 13-7 lead with 4:39 left in the first quarter, and closed the period on a 7-2 run for a 20-9 advantage.

Belle Vernon outscored Lincoln Park, 8-4, in the early part of the second quarter, and had a 28-13 lead after Emerson LaCarte converted on a three-point play. Lyla McConnell scored on a putback for two of her 20 points and the home team had a 30-13 cushion with 5:31 remaining in the first half. Belle Vernon had a 22-17 advantage in the second frame for a 42-26 halftime lead.

The home team outscored the visitors, 27-19, in the third quarter for a 69-45 advantage heading into the final frame. Lincoln Park had a 17-16 edge in the fourth quarter.

Belle Vernon’s Aubrey Brown led the game in scoring with 24 points, including five 3-pointers. Teammate Lyla McConnell added 20. Isis Almyty added 11 points.

Patty Wesolowski led Lincoln Park in scoring with 19 points. Teammates Ashtyn Michael (14) and Scarlet D’Amico (13) were in double figures.

Boys results

Neshannock 58, Fort Cherry 40: Fourth-seeded Neshannock used a 20-2 run in the second half to pull away from upset-minded Fort Cherry and defeat the Rangers 58-40 in a Class 2A first-round game.

Fort Cherry (13-9) led 13-12 after one quarter and 23-21 at halftime. The Rangers added to the lead early in the third quarter, but Neshannock (18-4) closed the third quarter on a 16-2 run to take a 37-29 advantage.

The Lancers scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to complete the game-turning run.

David Kwait led Neshannock in scoring with 17 points and Jino Mozzocio had 12.

Junior Tyler Wolfe had a big game for Fort Cherry. He scored 16 of his 21 points in the first half and finished the night with 14 rebounds (eight offensive).

OLSH 54, Bentworth 40: Frankie Igrec scored 12 points in the pivotal third quarter as third-seeded Our Lady of the Sacred Heart erased a halftime deficit and defeated visiting Bentworth 54-40 in a Class 2A first-round game.

Bentworth (15-7) had a great start and led 13-5 after one quarter. The Bearcats took a 22-17 advantage into halftime.

OLSH took its first lead of the game at 23-22 and finished the quarter with 25 points to forge a 42-33 lead. Igrec made consecutive three-pointers in the pivotal third quarter that helped OLSH move ahead.

Bentworth was held to 18 points in the second half.

In other games: Sewickley Academy defeated the Monessen girls 64-41 in a Class A first-round game. Monessen ends the season with a 7-15 record.
