High school basketball: Trinity, Waynesburg fall in consolation games
High school basketball
Trinity will enter the PIAA Class 5A girls basketball playoffs as either the seventh- or eight-place team out of the WPIAL.
The Hillers were knocked into next week’s 7-8 game when they lost 49-38 at Baldwin in a consolation round game Friday night on the Highlanders’ home court.
Trinity (17-8) and Baldwin (20-5) had split a pair of section games during the regular season with each team winning on its home court. Baldwin protected its court again, using a big first half to pull away from Trinity.
The Highlanders led 11-5 after one quarter, and then outscored Trinity 20-5 in the pivotal second quarter to take a 21-point lead into halftime.
Lindsay Bernotas led Baldwin in scoring with 11 points and Kelsey Mayer had 10.
Sutton Williamson and Gabby Humphreys each tallied seven points for Trinity.
Trinity will play either Fox Chapel or Indiana in the seventh-place game, which will be played Tuesday.
OLSH 68, Waynesburg 51
The WPIAL Class 3A consolation round game Friday night didn’t start well for the young Waynesburg girls basketball team.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart scored the first 15 points of the matchup.
After Waynesburg finally put its first point on the scoreboard, the game didn’t get any better for the Raiders.
OLSH put four players in double figures and used a big first half to defeat visiting Waynesburg, 68-51.
The loss ends Waynesburg’s season with a 21-4 record. OLSH qualifies for the state tournament and improves its record to 19-6. OLSH was the No. 6 seed in the WPIAL tournament while Waynesburg was seeded sixth.
OLSH started fast, building an 11-0 lead a little more than two minutes into the game. The Chargers led 15-0 before Emma Blair made a three-pointer.
Waynesburg battled back and closed to within 19-11 at the end of the first quarter but OLSH used an 18-4 scoring edge in the second period to take a commanding 37-15 lead into halftime.
Waynesburg outscored OLSH 36-31 in the second half.
Rowan Winter led the balanced OLSH attack with 16 points. Vivenne Goshen netted 14 points, Leah Parker had 13 and Shae Trombetta 10.
Waynesburg’s three leading scorers in the game are all freshmen. Blair finished with 15 points after scoring all 11 Raiders points in the opening quarter. Addonae Johnson scored all 13 of her points in the second half and Tess Pauley chipped in with 10.
