High school basketball: Trinity enters PIAA tournament on winning note
The Trinity High School girls basketball team will enter the PIAA playoffs next week as the seventh-place team out of the WPIAL in Class 5A.
The Hillers secured that spot Tuesday night with a convincing 68-45 road win over Fox Chapel in the consolation round.
Trinity (18-8) will play either the District 4 or District 6 champion (Hollidaysburg) in the first round of the state tournament on Saturday, March 7.
Against Fox Chapel, Trinity took control of the game early, racing out to an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Hillers maintained a 10-point edge, 32-22, at halftime. The Hillers ended any thoughts of a comeback by Fox Chapel (15-11) by outsourcing the Foxes 17-9 in the pivotal third quarter to build a 49-31 edge.
Gabby Humphreys led the Trinity attack by scoring a game-high 19 points. Sutton Williamson and Vitt Emerich each netted 13 points and Bently Layhue grabbed 13 rebounds to go with her eight points.
Nina Kutikowski led Fox Chapel in scoring with 10 points. The Foxes also qualified for the PIAA tournament and will play the District 3 champion.
Penn-Trafford 54, Peters Township 51
Torrie DeStefano scored 19 points and Penn-Trafford stormed back in the fourth quarter to beat Peters Township 54-51 in the WPIAL Class 5A third-place game played on the Warriors’ home court.
Peters Township (16-10) led 41-34 after three quarters, but Penn-Trafford outscored the Indians 20-10 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
The loss leaves Peters Township as the fourth-place team from the WPIAL. In the PIAA playoffs that begin March 7, PT will play the third-place finisher from District 3.
Peters Township trailed 26-24 at halftime against Penn-Trafford and seemingly took control of the game in the third quarter when the Indians moved in front, 41-34.
Bri Morreale had a huge game for Peters Township as she tossed in a game-high 25 points, including 15 in the first half.
Boys results
Monessen 47, Nazareth Prep 43: Monessen will be the No. 3 seed out of the WPIAL in Class A boys when the state tournament begins.
The Greyhounds won the third-place game, edging Nazareth Prep 47-43 at Penn-Trafford.
Monessen (13-10) will play the District 9 champion in the first round on Friday, March 6.
Tayvin Cragette led Monessen in scoring with 17 points and Rodney Johnson tossed in 12.
Nazareth Prep’s Zach Frye scored a game-high 21 points.
Monessen 14-12 after one quarter but held Nazareth Prep to only two points in the second quarter to take a 24-16 lead into halftime.
