High school basketball: Burgettstown girls clinch spot in state playoffs

The Burgettstown girls basketball team is headed to the state playoffs.
Camryn Reddinger scored 12 points – all on three-point field goals – Paige Klodowski added 10 and Burgettstown defeated Laurel 42-27 in the WPIAL’s Class 2A seventh-place game Wednesday night.
Burgettstown (18-8) qualifies for the PIAA playoffs that begin Friday, March 6. The Blue Devils will play the WPIAL champion, either Neshannock or Winchester Thurston, in the first round.
Laurel’s season ends with a 13-13 record that includes two losses to Burgettstown. The Blue Devils beat the Spartans, also on the Blue Devils’ home court, 39-24, back on Dec. 16.
This game also was a 15-point win for Burgettstown. The Blue Devils, however, didn’t take control until the second half, after leading 13-10 at intermission.
Burgettstown outscored Laurel 18-7 in the pivotal third quarter to open a commanding 31-17 lead. Reddinger helped the Blue Devils stay in front with a pair of three-pointers in the second half.
Jael Henderson was the only player who scored in double figures for Laurel. She netted 12 points.
Belle Vernon 44, South Park 27
Belle Vernon held visiting South Park to only six points in the second half and beat the Eagles 44-27 in the WPIAL’s Class 4A fifth-place game.
Belle Vernon (22-4) will play either the District 9 champion or the Pittsburgh City League winner in the first round of the state playoffs on March 7.
The Leopards were locked in a 21-21 tie at halftime against South Park (16-10) but used a 9-3 scoring margin in the third quarter to move ahead for good. Belle Vernon closed the game by outpointing South Park 14-3 in the fourth quarter.
Aubrey Brown led the Leopards with 13 points and nine rebounds. Lyla McConnell contributed 11 points for the Leopards.
Aliquippa 45, Fort Cherry 41
Jaionna Bank scored 15 points, Jayonne Patrick added 13 and Aliquippa edged host Fort Cherry 45-41 in the WPIAL Class 2A fifth-place game.
Julie Klose led Fort Cherry in scoring with 13 points. Emily Pfender finished with 12.
Fort Cherry will enter the state playoffs March 6 against the District 10 champion.
