C-H finishes 3rd, awaits PIAA playoffs
The Chartiers-Houston girls basketball team finished in third place in the WPIAL’s Class 2A tournament.
The Bucs rode a strong first half to a 56-50 victory over Rochester in the third-place game played Thursday night on the Chartiers-Houston court.
The win makes Chartiers-Houston’s record 21-4 and sends the Bucs into the PIAA playoffs for a first-round game against the District 9 runner-up, either Kane or Keystone, on Friday, March 6.
Chartiers-Houston led Rochester (14-11) by only 9-7 after one quarter but moved out to a 23-16 halftime lead that had the Rams playing catch-up ball the rest of the way. Both teams scored 16 points in the third quarter and Rochester held a slim 18-17 edge in the final period that saw the Bucs spend most of the quarter at the free-throw line.
Ava Kolovich led a balanced scoring attack for C-H by tossing in 15 points. Mackenzie Walsh followed with 13 points and Allison Wingard netted 11.
Rochester’s Syrin Crosby matched Kolovich for game scoring honors with 15 points. Kamryn Newman had 12 points and Tia Yellock had 11.
Rochester also qualified for the PIAA playoffs and will face the District 10 runner-up, either Kennedy Catholic or Wilmington.
