High school basketball: South Fayette girls defeat Ohio powerhouse
Juliette Leroux scored 30 points and South Fayette, fresh off its trip to play in Tampa, won at Archbishop Hoban (Ohio) 75-65 on Friday afternoon.
The game was a makeup from a postponed contest on Dec. 13.
South Fayette (11-1), the defending PIAA Class 5A champion, outscored Bishop Hoban, the top-ranked team in Ohio, in each of the first three quarters and withstood a game-high 35 points from the Knights’ Niera Stevens.
The Lions led 26-21 after one quarter, 39-31 at halftime and 57-45 after three quarters.
In addition to Leroux’s big game, South Fayette received 21 points from Haylie Lamonde.
Mars 40, Peters Township 31
Alexi Cashdollar poured in a game-high 24 points and visiting Mars shut down Peters Township in the second half to beat the Indians 40-31 in a non-section game.
Mars (2-7), which stopped a five-game losing streak, led 21-18 at halftime and 28-25 after three quarters. The Planets secured the win with a 12-6 scoring edge in the final period.
PT did much of its scoring from long range. Bre Morreale led the Indians with 14 points, which included four three-point field goals. Taylor McCullough added 11 points and a trio of three-pointers.
The loss drops Peters Township’s record to 5-5. The Indians have lost three of their last four.
In other games
The Ringgold boys were edged 55-49 by West Carrolton (Ohio) at Rockets Mortgage Arena in Cleveland. The loss drops the Rams’ record to 8-3. No game details were made available by press time.
