High school basketball: Defense delivers first-half shutout for PT

The Peters Township girls team took out some of its early season frustrations against Albert Gallatin on Monday night.
The Indians shut out the Colonials in the first half and went on to win 57-13 to secure its first Class 5A Section 4 win of the season.
The Indians (1-3, 6-6) led 36-0 at halftime.
Bri Morreale had 18 points and Taylor McCullough scored 10.
Mikayla Shea and Ellie Seese scored five points each for Albert Gallatin (0-5, 0-10).
Fort Cherry 59 Burgettstown 37
Brooke Cornali had 15 points and Julie Klose contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to help Fort Cherry (3-0, 8-4) earn a 59-37 win over Burgettstown in Class 2A Section 2.
Amarah Martino added 10 points for the Rangers, who started strong and led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Emilyn Harrison led Burgettstown (2-1, 8-4) with nine points.
West Greene 60, Bishop Canevin 41
Kendra Tharp led three West Greene players in double figures with 16 points and the Pioneers pulled away in the second half to beat host Bishop canevin 60-41 in Class A Section 2.
West Greene (4-1, 9-2) led by only 28-25 at halftime but held Bishop Canevin (2-3, 3-7) to 16 points in the second half. The Pioneers netted 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Tharp helped the Pioneers by grabbing 20 rebounds. Jillissa Yeater tossed in 14 points and Maddy Roberts had 13.
Isabella Sysak scored a game-high 19 points for the Crusaders and Kya Cooley had 15.
Waynesburg 57, McGuffey 47
Peyton Cowell scored a game-high 16 points and Chatham Knight tossed in five three-point field goals as Waynesburg picked up its 10th win, a 57-47 home-court victory over McGuffey in Class 3A Section 3.
Waynesburg (3-1, 10-1) was locked in a tight game throughout, leading 26-22 at halftime and 46-38 after three quarters.
Knight scored all of her 15 points from behind the stripe. Emma Blair added 11 points for the Raiders.
It was the first section loss for McGuffey (3-1, 7-6). The Highlanders were led by Lucy Weiss’ 14 points. Maura Janovich scored 10.
South Fayette 77, New Castle 23
Defending PIAA champion South Fayette scorched visiting New Castle in the first half and went on to a 77-23 thumping in Class 5A Section 3.
The Lions (5-0, 12-1) raced out to a 35-3 lead at the end of one quarter and went into halftime with a 58-9 lead over the Red Hurricane (0-3, 0-9).
Haylie Lamonde, with 11 points, was the only South Fayette player to score in double figures.
New Castle’s Kamiya Thompkins scored a game-high 12 points.
Belle Vernon 58, Laurel Highlands 26
Lyla McConnell scored 20 points, Isis Almyty pulled down 14 rebounds and Belle Vernon defeated visiting Laurel Highlands 58-26 in Class 4A Section 3.
The Leopards (4-1, 8-3) held LH to nine points in the first half and by 19 at the break.
Emeron Lacarte scored nine of her 11 points from behind the three-point line for Belle Vernon and Saylor Lee had five steals.
Taylor Schwertfeger’s nine points were tops for LH (1-4, 3-9).
Geibel Catholic 79, Mapletown 11
Emma Larkin and Mallory Clemmer combined for 53 points as undefeated Geibel Catholic steamrolled host Mapletown 79-11 in Class A Section 2.
Geibel (5-0, 12-0) led 27-5 after one quarter and 50-8 at halftime.
Larkin led the Gators with 27 points and Clemmer followed with 26.
Mapletown is 0-5 in section and 1-12 overall.
Chartiers-Houston 57, Jefferson-Morgan 20
Freshman Hannah Russell scored a game-high 15 points as Chartiers-Houston (3-0, 10-1) secured a 57-20 win over Jefferson-Morgan in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
Ava Kolovich added 12 points for the Bucs, who held the Rockets to single-digit point totals in all four quarters.
Beautiful Medlen scored nine points for the Rockets (0-3, 5-6).
Beth-Center 43, Carmichaels 15
Beth-Center held Carmichaels to four points in the first half and went to win 43-15 in Class 2A Section 3 play.
Violet Trump had 14 points for the Bulldogs (1-1, 4-6) and Alexia Fischer scored 13.
Ke’Lani Chun finished with nine points for the Mikes (0-2, 1-9).
Serra Catholic 55, Monessen 38
Bella Dumbroski poured in a game-high 28 points as Serra Catholic won at Monessen, 55-38, in Class A Section 2.
Serra (5-0, 6-2) remained tied for the section lead with Geibel Catholic. The Eagles led Monessen 14-4 after one quarter, 26-12 at halftime and 36-20 after three quarters.
Madison Johnson led the Greyhounds (2-3, 2-7) with 20 points. Na’jaziah Carter had 10.
Elizabeth-Forward 57, Ringgold 15
Kaelynn Settles led three Elizabeth Forward players in double figures with 21 points in a 57-15 win over Ringgold in Class 4A Section 3.
Mia Sostaric finished with 14 points and Addison Wach scored 10 for the Warriors (3-1, 7-4).
Addison Jenkins had seven points for the Rams (2-2, 4-5).
In other games
Clairton was a 50-33 winner over Avella in Class A Section 2, and California won 48-25 at Bentworth. No game details were available by press time.
