High school basketball roundup: Peters Township outlasts SF in overtime
B-C\'s Zellie, Bentworth\'s Hays score 1,000th points
Dylan Donovan scored three of his six points in overtime, helping Peters Township outlast host South Fayette 49-45 in a Class 5A Section 3 boys basketball game Tuesday night.
The Indians (3-1, 9-3) trailed 31-29 after three quarters, went to overtime tied at 41 and held a 7-3 scoring edge in the extra period. Donovan made a key three-pointer in the fourth quarter for PT.
Peters Township was led in scoring by Jake Wetzel’s 14 points including a key basket in overtime. Jayden Greco added 12 and also had a field goal in the overtime.
Tyson Wright and Owen Keener each scored 11 points for South Fayette (2-3, 4-8).
Chartiers-Houston 52, Beth-Center 45
Aaron Walsh led three Chartiers-Houston players in double figures with 16 points and the Bucs remained unbeaten in Class 2A Section 3 play with a 52-45 victory over host Beth-Center.
Beth-Center’s Jason Zellie scored a game-high 19 points, including his 1,000th career point.
Wes Yeater netted 12 points and Byrson Boscovich added 10 for C-H, which led 25-18 at halftime and 38-26 after three quarters.
Clairton 65, Bentworth 47
Brandon Murphy and Taris Wooding combined for 40 points, powering Clairton to a 65-47 road win over Bentworth in Class 2A Section 1.
Bentworth’s Ben Hays poured in a game-high 30 points, giving him exactly 1,000 career points.
Murphy paced Clairton with 21 points and Wooding tossed in 19 for the Bears, who led 33-23 at halftime.
Ryan Moessner, with 10 points, was the only other Bentworth player in double figures.
Avella 55, Cornell 13
Avella’s strong start to the season continued as the Eagles steamrolled visiting Cornell 55-13 in Class A Section 1.
Bryce Wright scored 15 points and Brayden Fuller added 11 for Avella, which led 20-2 after one quarter and 55-4 at halftime.
The Eagles are 2-0 in the section and 9-2 overall.
Cornell slipped to 1-2 in section and 3-8 overall.
Charleroi 54, Mount Pleasant 51
Charleroi held visiting Mount Pleasant to seven points in the fourth quarter and held off the Vikings for a 54-51 victory in Class 3A Section 4.
Xavion Thomas and Jackson Keranko each scored 17 points to lead the Cougars (1-2, 6-7).
Charleroi led 17-12 after one quarter but Mount Pleasant (1-2, 3-9) battled back and took a 33-30 lead into halftime. Charleroi outscored the Vikings 16-11 in the pivotal third quarter to open a 46-44 lead and the Cougars stayed in front by holding the visitors to the seven-point final period.
Kade Hutchinson paced Mount Pleasant with 12 points.
Belle Vernon 77, East Allegheny 40
Elijah Majors led a balanced Belle Vernon attack with 16 points as the Leopards rolled to 77-40 victory over visiting East Allegheny in Class 4A Section 3.
The win improves Belle Vernon’s record 4-1 in the section and 8-6. The Leopards led 19-12 at the end of the first quarter and then took firm control of the game by outpointing EA by a 46-20 margin over the next 16 minutes.
AJ Watson scored 13 points for Belle Vernon, and Luca Ghilani and Cam Jenko each tallied 12.
East Allegheny (2-2, 6-4) was led by Jayden Patterson’s 14 points.
West Greene 76, Burgettstown 61
Landon Hill poured in a game-high 27 points and West Greene scored 50 in the second half to beat host Burgettstown 76-61 in Class 2a Section 3.
Burgettstown led 38-26 at halftime before Hill and the Pioneers mounted their comeback. West Greene cut Burgettstown’s lead to 52-49 at the end of the third quarter, then used a 27-9 scoring edge in the final period to pull away for the win.
Matt Wassil also hit double figures for the Pioneers with 13 points.
Blake Neal led three Burgettstown players in double figures with 18 points. Trent Stevens followed with 16 and Bryce Speer netted 10.
Sto-Rox 54, Washington 45
Sto-Rox pulled away down the stretch to beat visiting Washington, 54-45.
Will Callan tossed in a game-high 17 points to pace Wash High and Vincent Johnson added 14.
Marcus Griffin netted a game-high 18 points for Sto-Rox, which led 25-21 at halftime and 42-34 after three quarters.
Southmoreland 47, Waynesburg 46
Southmoreland outscored visiting Waynesburg 14-10 in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 47-46 win over the Raiders.
The game was close throughout as Southmoreland led 21-20 at halftime before Waynesburg went ahead 36-33 after three quarters.
Waynesburg’s dane Woods scored a game-high 15 points to go with 14 rebounds. Cole Headlee followed with 14 points.
Noah Felentzer’s 11 points led Southmoreland.
Carmichaels Carmichaels 68, Mapletown 37
Carmichaels pulled away in the second half and won at Mapletown 62-37 in Class 2A Section 3.
Stephen Lewis had a game-high 18 points to power Carmichaels, which held a 29-20 lead at halftime. Chase Ankrom scored 14 points and Scott Maskil had 10.
Mapletown, which remains winless, received 16 points from Carson Vanata.
Girls results
Brownsville 47, Carmichaels 32
Ava Clark and Clara Horabik combined for 38 points as Brownsville defeated visiting Carmichaels 47-32 in a non-section game.
Brownsville (3-9) snapped a five-game losing streak. The Falcons trailed 10-8 after one quarter but outscored Carmichaels 28-13 over the next two periods.
Clark led Brownsville with a game-high 21 points and Horabik chipped in with 17.
Carmichaels (1-11) was led in scoring by Ke’Lani Chun’s nine points.
Canon-McMillan 48, Hempfield 31
Canon-McMillan outscored visiting Hempfield 12-0 in the first four minutes of the second half and went on to a 48-31 victory in a Class 6A Section 2 game.
The score was tied 11-11 at halftime before C-M’s strong start to the second half. The Big Macs (3-0, 10-2) secured the win by scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Hempfield is 1-2 in section and 9-3 overall. No other game details were reported by press time.
