High school basketball: Balanced attack key to McGuffey girls victory

Maura Janovich led three McGuffey players in double figures with 11 points and the Highlanders used balanced scoring to beat visiting Washington 44-35 in a Class 3A Section 3 girls basketball game Thursday night.

Hailey Rogers and Lucy Weiss each tossed in 10 points for McGuffey (4-1, 8-6), which outscored the Prexies in each of the first three quarters to forge a 33-23 lead.

Faith Partizoti scored a game-high 13 points for Wash High (2-3, 6-6).

Fort Cherry 69, Northgate 6

The Fort Cherry girls basketball team put up a final score that might make you think it was the Rangers’ football team that was playing.

Fort Cherry stayed on top of Class 2A Section 2 with a 69-6 win over visiting Northgate.

Fort Cherry (4-0, 9-4) led 29-0 at the end of one quarter, 53-0 at halftime and took the shutout into the fourth quarter, leading 65-0.

Brooke Cornali was the Rangers’ leading scorer with 14 points, Gianna Bianchini had 12, and Allison Litman and Julie Klose each tossed in 10.

Northgate is 1-3 in section and 4-7 overall.

Chartiers-Houston 47, Carmichaels 13

Chartiers-Houston cruised to its sixth consecutive victory, a 47-13 thumping of host Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 3.

The Bucs (4-0, 11-1) led 19-4 after one quarter and 34-4 at halftime.

Mckenzie Walsh and Ali Wingard each netted 10 points to lead a balanced C-H attack.

Ke’Lani Chun had seven points for Carmichaels (0-3, 1-12).

Keystone Oaks 48, Waynesburg 40

Natalee Totorella and Hannah York each scored 18 points, powering Keystone Oaks to a 48-40 victory over Waynesburg in Class 3A Section 3.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Waynesburg (3-2, 10-2). KO also is 3-2 in section, and 7-4 overall.

The difference in the game was the second quarter, when Waynesburg was held to three points. KO led 15-14 after one quarter and entered halftime with a 25-17 advantage. The Raiders closed to within 35-31 after three quarters.

Waynesburg’s Tess Pauley netted 16 points and was the lone player in double figures for the Raiders.

Trinity 47, Albert Gallatin 14

Sutton Williamson scored 14 points as Trinity moved above the .500 mark in Class 5A Section 4 play by routing winless Albert Gallatin 47-14 at Hiller Hall.

Trinity (3-2, 9-3) led 13-2 after one quarter and 26-4 at halftime. AG (0-6, 0-11) was shut out in the first half of a section game against Peters Township earlier this week.

Serra Catholic 55, West Greene 38

Bella Dumbroski scored a game-high 21 points and Serra Catholic rode a strong start to beat host West Greene 55-38 in a key Class A Section 2 game.

Serra (6-0, 7-3) scored the game’s first 11 points and led 21-8 at the end of the first quarter. West Greene (4-2, 8-3) held a 24-21 scoring edge over the next two quarters, but Serra secured the win with a 13-6 advantage over the final eight minutes, though West Greene did get as close as 44-38 midway through the fourth quarter.

Lexie Pierce scored 16 points and Niki Sfanos had 10 for Serra, which made eight three-point field goals.

West Greene’s Kendra Tharp had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Madelyn Roberts tossed in 10 points and Katie Brudnock had 10 rebounds.

Geibel Catholic 55, Monessen 22

Mallory Clemmer and Emma Lasrkin combined for 44 points, sparking undefeated geibel Catholic to a 55-22 victory over visiting Monessen in Class A Section 2.

Clemmer scored 23 points and Larkin was close behind with 21 as Geibel improved to 6-0 in the section and 13-0 overall.

Belle Vernon 52, Mount Pleasant 16

Belle Vernon won for the fifth time in six Class 4A Section 3 games when it routed host Mount Pleasant, 52-16.

Lyla McConnell had 11 points and six assists to lead the Belle Vernon (5-1, 9-3) floor game. Aubrey Brown followed with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Leopards, who led 33-8 at halftime.

In other games

Bishop Canevin was a 53-27 winner over visiting Avella in Class A Section 2. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter by press time.

Boys result

Beth-Center 78, Burgettstown 39

Jason Zellie, who scored his 1,000th career point earlier this week, poured in 23 more, leading four Beth-Center players in double figures as the Bulldogs won 78-39 over host Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 3 game.

The win evened the records for Beth-Center (3-3, 6-6). The Bulldogs were control early, building leads of 29-13 after one quarter and 54-22 at halftime.

Brayden Ozohonish scored 14 points for B-C, Parker Amos had 11 and Baryden Hull 10.

Colton County tallied 10 points for Burgettstown (0-6, 2-11).
