High school basketball: Tharp scores 1,000th point in West Greene victory

Jillissa Yeater and Kendra Tharp combined for 41 points, powering West Greene to a 67-28 win at Avella in a Class A Section 2 girls basketball game Friday night.

Yeater scored a game-high 21 points to lead West Greene (5-2, 10-3). Tharp followed with 20 points, including her 1,000th career point. She netted the 1,000th midway through the fourth quarter.

Madelyn Roberts and Katie Brudnock each tallied 10 points for the Pioneers, who led 34-18 at halftime and held Avella (1-6, 4-10) to 10 points in the second half.

Haleigh Rush and Madison Rush each scored 10 points for Avella.

Chartiers-Houston 37, Aquinas Academy 21

Chartiers-Houston outscored visiting Aquinas Academy in every quarter en route to a 37-21 victory in a non-section game.

The Bucs, who improved to 12-1 overall, led 16-10 at halftime and 29-17 after three quarters. The Bucs won with a balanced attack as Ali Wingard was C-H’s leading scorer with nine points.

Aquinas Academy (9-2) received a game-high 15 points from Elliot Keverline. It was the first loss of the season for Aquinas against a WPIAL opponent.

Chartiers-Houston has won seven in a row.

Peters Township 62, Uniontown 45

Bri Morreale flipped in a game-high 20 points and Peters Township rolled over visiting Uniontown 62-35 in Class 5A Section 4.

Maddy Mehl added 13 points for Peters Township.

Beth-Center 49, Bentworth 29

Beth-Center’s Violet Trump dominated under the basket as she scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 30 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 49-29 win at Bentworth in Class 2A Section 3 on Thursday.

The win has B-C (3-1, 6-7) tied with California for second place in the section.

The Bulldogs led 25-12 at halftime and 36-15 after three quarters.

Bailey Bernot scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Beth-Center.

Nora Lindley led Bentworth (2-2, 6-6) with 10 points.

Burgettstown 45, Brentwood 26

Paige Klodowski scored 20 points, powering Burgettston to a 45-26 win at Brentwood on Thursday in Class 2A Section 2.

The win leaves Burgettstown’s record at 2-1 in the section and 10-3 overall.

The Blue Devils forged a 28-11 halftime lead before Brentwood (1-3, 2-12) closed to within 33-20 after three quarters but that was as close as the Spartans would get.

Savanna Rush chipped in with 11 points for Burgettstown.

Charleroi 40, Brownsville 30

Eden Smith scored 16 points to help Charleroi fend off host Brownsville 40-30 in a Class 3A Section 3 game Thursday.

Charleroi (1-4, 4-8) led 15-5, 22-15 and 30-25 at the quarter breaks.

Ava Clark led Brownsville (0-6, 3-10) with 15 points.

California 49, Jefferson-Morgan 23

Hayley Gibson and Lila Mitchell scored 12 points each, sparking California to a 49-23 home-court win over Jefferson-Morgan in Class 2A Section 3 on Thursday.

Olivia Gibson added 10 points for the Trojans (2-1, 5-7).

Boys results

McGuffey 52, Sto-Rox 45

Kolt McGowan had a big game and McGuffey picked up a big win in Class 3A Section 2.

McGowan poured in a game-high 25 points and McGuffey defeated Sto-Rox 52-45 on the Highlanders’ home court.

The game was close throughout as McGuffey led 24-22 at halftime and 38-34 at the end of three quarters.

Sam Stout tossed in 11 points for McGuffey.

C.J. Washington’s 15 points were tops for Sto-Rox. Marcus Griffin had 13.

Washington 56, Carlynton 49

Tristan Reed scored a game-high 18 points and Washington overcame a slow start and rallied to win at Carlynton 56-49 in Class 3A Section 2.

Carlynton led 12-5 after eight minutes but Wash High owned the second period with a 19-7 scoring edge to take a 24-19 lead at halftime. The Prexies led 38-34 entering the fourth quarter.

Vincent Johnson followed Reed in the scoring column with 13 points.

Carlynton was led by Mickey Jenkins’ 15 points and 14 from Ishaga Barre.

Aquinas Academy 61, Avella 48

Aquinas Academy built a double-digit lead in the first quarter and went on to a 61-48 victory over visiting Avella in Class A Section 1.

The Eagles trailed 34-18 at halftime but closed to within 50-38 after three quarters.

Sam Duer scored a game-high 18 points for Aquinas.

Avella was led in scoring by Cam Ullom with 16 points and Brayden Fuiller with 14.

Bentworth 56, California 26

Ben Hays poured in 26 points and Bentworth cruised to a 56-26 victory at California.

Bentworth led 22-2 after one quarter and 44-8 at halftime.

Belle Vernon 73, Greensburg Salem 33

Jude Minniti scored 16 points to spark Belle Vernon to a 73-33 rout of visiting Greensburg Salem in a Class 4A Section 3 game.

The Leopards (5-1, 9-6) were in control from the start as they built leads of 24-14 after one quarter and 40-22 at halftime.

Dane Daugherty was the only other Belle Vernon player in double figures as he scored 14 points. Daugherty made four three-point baskets.

Greensburg Salem is 1-4, 5-7.

Monessen 59, St. Joseph 30

Monessen scored 38 points in the second half and pulled away for a 59=30 victory over visiting St. Joseph in Class A Section 2.

Monessen (2-2, 5-5) led 21-10 at halftime and secured the victory when it forged a 17-9 scoring edge in the third quarter. The Greyhounds tacked on 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Torrance Taylor led three Monessen players in double figures with 18 points. Rodney Johnson followed with 15 and Tayvin Craggette added 10.

Nick Tomdesko led St. Joseph (1-3, 4-9) with 13 points.

Chartiers-Houston 70, Mapletown 11

Chartiers-Houston remained unbeaten in Class 2A Section 3 play with a 70-11 thumping of visiting Mapletown.

The Bucs (6-0, 11-2) led 33-0 after the first quarter and also shut out Mapletown (0-6, 0-12) in the fourth quarter.

Wes Yeater was the leading scorer in the Bucs’ balanced attack with 13 points. Aaron Walsh had 12 points and Bryson Boskovich 11. Eleven different players for C-H scored.

Carson Vanata had five points for Mapletown.

South Fayette 53, Trinity 52

South Fayette held off a late comeback attempt by Trinity and edged the Hillers 53-52 in a Class 5A Section 3 game at Hiller Hall.

South Fayette led 29-19 at halftime and Trinity battled back to within 45-38 after three quarters. The Hillers held a 14-8 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.

Owen Kenner led the Lions with 15 points and Tyson Wright followed with 14.

Trinity’s Jonah Williamson tossed in a game-high 24 points.

Charleroi 70, Brownsville 59

Charleroi rode a 27-point third quarter to a 70-59 victory over host Brownsville in Class 3A Section 4.

Charleroi (2-2, 7-7), which reached the .500 mark, trailed 34-24 at halftime but erupted for a 27-8 scoring edge in the pivotal third quarter to take the lead for good.

Xavion Thomas paced the Cougars with 16 points, Brock Henderson had 14 and Jackson Keranko 13.

Jaden Praister netted 15 points to lead Brownsville (0-4, 1-10).
