High school basketball: Beth-Center overcomes long-range barrage

West Greene’s Hill makes 9 three-pointers

It was raining three-pointers Tuesday night at Beth-Center.

Jason Zellie and Brayden Hull each scored 19 points, combining for eight three-point field goals, as Beth-Center rode a big first quarter to a 76-67 victory over West Greene in a Class 2A Section 3 boys basketball game.

The Bulldogs had to withstand an impressive long-range display by West Greene’s Landen Hill and Darren Knight. Hill scored a game-high 38 points that included nine three-pointers. Knight finished with 18 points and six baskets from behind the stripe.

The key to the B-C was the first quarter, when the Bulldogs forged a 25-5 advantage. West Greene did pull to within 34-30 at halftime, but B-C led 56-46 after three quarters.

Parker Amos scored 16 points and Chris Bebout had 11 for B-C. Zellie made five three-point shots. Hull and Amos each netted three from long range.

Washington 51, McGuffey 41

Will Callan scored 10 of his 15 points in the pivotal third quarter as Washington charged back from a halftime deficit to beat McGuffey 51-41 in Class 3A Section 2.

McGuffey led 26-16 at halftime after making a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer. But Washington overcame its sluggish start and picked up the pace in the third quarter, outpointing McGuffey 18-4 in the period to take a 34-30 lead.

The Prexies closed the win with a 17-11 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Vince Johnson had a strong overall game and scored 12 points for Wash High. Tristan Reed added 11.

McGuffey received 14 points from Sam Stout and 12 from Ayden Janovich.

Charleroi 74, Ligonier Valley 70

Xavion Thomas led three Charleroi players in double figures with 20 points and the Cougars pulled out a 74-70 win over Ligonier Valley in Class 3A Section 4.

The win moved Charleroi above the .500 mark overall at 8-7.

Jackson Keranko netted 12 points and Braeden Todaro added 11 for the Cougars.

Waynesburg 53, Mount Pleasant 45

Waynesburg outscored Mount Pleasant by seven points in the fourth quarter to secure a 53-45 victory in a Class 3A Section 4 game played on the Raiders’ home court.

Waynesburg led 27-20 at halftime and 36-35 after three quarters.

Cole Headlee had a huge game for Waynesburg, tossing in a game-high 26 points. Jackson Dean followed with 11 and Austin Surber chipped in with 10.

Jonah Townsend netted 13 points for Mount Pleasant and gage Valone had 12.

Ringgold 56, Trinity 44

Ringgold played a strong second half and picked up a key 56-44 home-court win over Trinity in Class 5A Section 3.

Trinity led 28-26 at halftime, but Ringgold used a 13-6 scoring edge in the third quarter to take the lead and closed the game by holding Trinity to 10 points in the final period.

Chris Wilson led four Ringgold players in double figures with 14 points. Takeo Tolliver added 11 to the balanced attack, and Dennis Hawkisn and Bralen Lomax had 10 each.

Jonah Williamson had 14 points for Trinity followed by Andrew Selway with 13 and Ian Migyanko with 10.

Fort Cherry 79, Carmichaels 26

Connor Vansickle scored 21 points to lead Fort Cherry to a 79-26 thumping of Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 3.

Fort Cherry, which led 45-16 halftime, had 12 players in the scoring column.

Bentworth 56, Frazier 35

It took some time for Bentworth to get going, but once the Bearcats did there was no stopping them.

Ben Hays scored 21 points, sparking Bentworth to a 56-35 win over Frazier in Class 2A Section 1.

Bentworth led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bearcats kicked their attack into high gear in the second, scoring 22 points and taking a 24-14 lead into halftime that grew throughout the final 16 minutes.

Ryan Moessner scored 12 points for Bentworth and Levi Urcho added 11.

Burgettstown 67, Mapletown 20

Burgettstown picked up its first league victory of the season, winning 67-20 at winless Mapletown in Class 2A Section 3.

The Blue Devils forged a 19-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and moved out to a 43-14 halftime advantage.

Colton County led Burgettstown’s offense with 16 points. Caleb Matalik followed with 13 points and Bryce Speer had 12.

Monessen 61, Geibel Catholic 48

Torrence Taylor scored a game-high 22 points as Monessen won at Geibel Catholic 61-48 in Class A Section 2.

Monessen led 28-20 at halftime but Geibel trimmed its deficit to 45-41 entering the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds held an 18-7 scoring advantage in the final period.

Rodney Johnson contributed 14 points for Monessen and Kayden Kolbeck had 10.

Girls results

Bethel Park 40, Peters Township 33, OT

Peters Township made a second-half comeback that forced overtime but the Indians’ attack ran out of gas in the extra session as Bethel Park pulled out a 40-33 victory in a Class 5A Section 4 game.

Peters Township (2-4, 7-7) trailed 20-11 at halftime and 27-20 after three quarters but rallied and forced overtime tied at 31-31. Bethel Park (3-3, 8-5) outscored the Indians 9-2 in the extra time.

The win moves Bethel Park into fourth place, which is the final playoff spot, in the section, one game ahead of Peters Township.

Waynesburg 62, Charleroi 28

Freshman Tess Pauley led three Waynesburg players in double figures with a game-high 21 points as the Raiders cruised to a 62-28 victory over visiting Charleroi on Monday in Class 3A Section 3.

The Raiders had a 14-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back, building a 36-17 edge at halftime.

Emma Blair and Peyton Cowell scored 10 points each for Waynesburg (4-2, 6-2).

Eden Smith led Charleroi in scoring with 18 points.
