High school basketball: Chartiers-Houston rallies to remain unbeaten in section
Brody McCrerey scored 15 points, Wes Yeater added 10 and the Chartiers-Houston boys basketball team remained in first place in Class 2A Section 3 with a 49-40 win at Fort Cherry on Friday night.
C-H moved to 8-0 in the section and 13-3 overall. Fort Cherry is 5-3, 8-5.
Fort Cherry led 26-24 at halftime and 33-29 after three quarters.
C-H won the game with a 20-7 scoring edge in the pivotal fourth quarter.
The difference in the game was the free-throw line, where Chartiers-Houston made 10 more shots than Fort Cherry. The Bucs, however, could have had an even bigger edge because they made only 15 of 29 free throws. Fort Cherry was 5-for-15.
The Rangers’ Connor Vansickle scored a game-high 18 points.
Avella 66, Beaver County Christian 30
Bryce Wright and Nate Cilia combined for 38 points, sparking Avella to a 66-30 home-court win over Beaver County Christian in Class A Section 1.
The Eagles improved to 4-1 in section and 11-3 overall.
The game was decided early. Avella controlled the tempo and raced out to an 18-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles led 36-14 at halftime.
Wright led the Avella attack with a game-high 20 points but Cilia was close behind with 18. Brayden Fuller, with 12 points, gave the Eagles three players in double figures.Ethan Schmidt led BCC with nine points.
Jefferson-Morgan 58, Burgettstown 47
Jeremiah Robertson poured in a game-high 26 points and Jefferson-Morgan got back on the winning track with a 58-47 victory over visiting Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
The win makes Jefferson-Morgan 7-1 in the section and 13-1 overall. Burgettstown slipped to 1-7, 4-12.
J-M led by only 21-14 at halftime and moved out to a 9-3 advantage after three quarters.
Brayden Ellsworth chipped in with 13 points for the Rockets and Dayten Marion had 10.
Blake Neal’s 11 points were tops for Burgettstown and Bryce Speer netted 10.
Trinity 59, Bethel Park 53
Trinity battled back from a halftime deficit and defeated host Bethel Park 59-53 in Class 5A Section 3.
The Hillers (2-5, 4-9) trailed 28-26 at halftime but moved ahead for good in the fourth quarter when they outpointed Bethel Park 19-14.
Jonah Williamson and Sam Johnson each scored 12 points to pace the Trinity attack.
Beth-Center 78, Mapletown 26
Jason Zellie led four Beth-Center players in double figures with 17 points and the Bulldogs used a huge first half to rout winless Mapletown 78-26 in Class 2A Section 3.
Beth-Center (5-3, 9-6) led 54-12 at halftime.
Parker Amos and Brayden Hull each flipped in 16 points for Beth-Center and Brayden Ozohonish finished with 12.
Mapletown (0-8, 0-14) received 12 points from Kaleb Evosevich and 10 from Coltin Halbert.
Charleroi 54, Environmental Charter 26
Charleroi moved above the .500 mark with a 54-26 win over visiting Environment Charter in a non-section game.
The Cougars (9-8) controlled the tempo and took charge early, forging a 15-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Charleroi led 34-8 at halftime.
Braedon Todaro and Jackson Keranko each scored 10 points to lead the Cougars.
Thomas Jefferson 77, Peters Township 54
Class 5A Section 3 leader Thomas Jefferson pulled away in the second half and defeated visiting Peters Township, 77-54.
Nick Trklja scored 24 points and Justin Fry added 22 for TJ (7-0, 15-1), which led 36-30 at halftime. The Jaguars made four of their 12 three-point field goals in the third quarter when they moved out to a 58-46 lead.
Dylan Donovan poured in a game-high 28 points for Peters Township (5-2, 11-4). Donovan scored 13 of his points in the third quarter.
Avella 62, Summit Academy 58
Bruce Wright had a double-double and Avella picked up an important road victory in Class A Section 1 with a late comeback Thursday night as the Eagles won at Summit Academy 62-58 in boys basketball action.
Wright scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Avella improved to 3-1 in the section and 10-3 overall. The Eagles had to come from behind to beat Summit Academy (2-3, 7-5). The home team led 27-21 at halftime and 44-40 after three quarters.
Avella’s Brayden Fuller scored 11 of his 13 points in the pivotal fourth quarter as the Eagles used a 22-14 scoring advantage to win the game. Cam Ullom had nine points and 10 rebounds to help Avella’s cause.
Summit Academy’s Demetreus Crosby scored a game-high 26 points and Kyzie Rowan added 23.
Girls results
Trinity 40, Bethel Park 34
Trinity picked up a key road win in Class 5A Section 4, defeating Bethel Park, 40-34.
The Hillers (5-2, 12-3) trailed 18-16 at halftime and 27-25 at the end of three quarters. Trinity won the game, and its fifth contest in a row, by holding a 15-7 scoring edge over the final eight minutes.
Sutton Williamson was the only Trinity player to score in double figures. She finished with 14 points.
Fiona O’Neil netted 11 for Bethel Park (3-4, 8-6).
Beth-Center 49, California 35
Violet Trump scored a game-high 20 points, grabbed 24 rebounds and helped Beth-Center pull away in the second half for a 49-35 victory over visiting New Castle in non-section play.
Beth-Center led 23-16 at halftime and 33-27 after three quarters. But the Bulldogs took control down the stretch with a 16-8 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.
Alexia Fischer helped the Bulldogs’ cause with a double-double. She scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Elliana Revi had six steals.
Ka’Mya Thompson led New Castle in scoring with 14 points.
Bentworth 64, Avella 36
Bentworth started quickly and then cruised to a 64-36 victory over visiting Avella in a non-section contest.
The Bearcats scored 23 points in the first quarter to build an 11-point advantage that became 44-20 at halftime.
Bella Moyer led Bentworth with a game-high 15 points and Elizabeth Wade followed with 10.
Hayleigh Rush had 12 points and Maddie Rush scored 10 for Avella.
In other games
The West Greene boys dominated the middle two quarters and won at Carmichaels, 70-47, in Class 2A Section 3. West Greene held a 41-20 scoring edge over the second and third periods. Baldwin (13-2) won at Canon-McMillan (11-4) 46-37 in a non-section girls game. No other game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter by press time.
