High school basketball: C-H, Belle Vernon boys stay on top, cruise to wins

Chartiers-Houston remained in sole possession of first place in Class 2A Section 3 boys basketball by rolling over visiting Carmichaels 54-19 on Tuesday night.

The Bucs improved to 9-0 in the section and 14-3 overall. Carmichaels is 2-7, 3-12.

The Bucs pulled away in the second quarter after leading 13-8 after one period. C-H took a 28-12 lead into half and extended it to 52-15 after three quarters.

It was a balanced attack for the Bucs as only one player, Tommy Dzura, hit double figures. Dzura scored 11 points.

Belle Vernon 79, Yough 43

Class 4A Section 3 leader Belle Vernon, sparked by a 23-point performance by Elijah Majors, routed visiting Yough 79-43.

The surging Leopards are 7-1 in the section and 11-7 overall.

Vincenzo Francia added 10 for Belle Vernon, which struggled at the free-throw line making only seven of 23 attempts.

Fort Cherry 62, Burgettstown 45

Connor Vansickle scored a game-high 20 points and Fort Cherry pulled away over the middle quarters for a 62-45 victory over Burgettstown in Class 2A Section 3.

Fort Cherry trailed 12-11 at the end of one quarter but used a 33-18 advantage over the next two periods to take a 44-30 lead.

Landon Trnavsky tossed in 11 points to help the Rangers’ cause.

Burgettstown was led by Blake Neal’s 12 points and 11 from Trent Stevens.

Peters Township 72, Baldwin 64

Peters Township put five players in double figures, led by Dylan Donovan’s 17 points, and the Indians defeated visiting Baldwin 72-64 in a Class 5A Section 3 contest.

Lucas Save and Talen Stauffer each tossed in 13 points, Jayden Greco had 12 and Lucas Rost 11 for PT (6-2, 12-4).

Jefferson-Morgan 66, Beth-Center 44

Brayden Ellsworth scored 17 points, Dayten Marion and Jeremiah Robertson each had 15 and Jefferson-Morgan defeated Beth-Center 66-44 in Class 2A Section 3.

The win keeps J-M (7-1, 14-1) on the heels of first-place Chartiers-Houston in the section.

The Rockets used a 25-9 scoring edge in the first quarter to stay in front the rest of the way. Triton Farabee chipped in with 12 points for J-M.

Beth-Center (5-4, 9-7) was led by Jason Zellie’s 19 points and 11 by Parker Amos.

South Park 47, Waynesburg 45

South Park survived a huge scare from Waynesburg, beating the visiting Raiders 47-45 in a non-section game.

South Park (14-2) led 23-15 at halftime, but Waynesburg charged ahead, 33-32, at the end of three quarters. South Park won with a 15-12 scoring edge over the final eight minutes.

Luke Scarff scored a game-high 23 points for the Eagles and Cooper Hochendoner had 15.

Dane Woods led Waynesburg (5-9) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Cole Headlee tossed in 18 points to go with five assists.

Springdale 76, California 34

Springdale was a 76-34 winner at winless California in Class 2A Section 1.

Alan Dennis scored 13 points for the Trojans.

Jeannette 62, Bentworth 38

McAllister Steele scored 15 points as Class 2A Section 1 leader Jeannette defeated Bentworth 62-38 on the Bearcats’ home court.

Jeannette (9-0, 14-1) moved ahead early in the game, leading 19-6 after the first quarter and 36-17 at halftime.

Ben Hays netted a game-high 16 points for Bentworth (6-4, 11-4). Levi Urcho had 10.

West Greene 73, Mapletown 29

West Greene moved above the .500 mark in Class 2A Section 3 play with a 73-29 victory over winless Mapletown.

The Pioneers (5-4, 6-9) led 51-10 at halftime. West Greene had four players score in double figures led by Landen Hill’s 19 points. Matt Wassil had 14, Brett Scott 11 and Joseph Blair 10.

Mapletown’s Kaleb Evosevich matched Hill for game scoring honors with 19 points.

Girls results

Belle Vernon 57, West Mifflin 25

Aubrey Brown had a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds, powering Belle Vernon to a 57-25 home-court win over West Mifflin in a non-section game.

Brown helped the Leopards (14-3) race out to a 38-8 halftime lead and win for the eighth consecutive game. Lyla McConnell was the only other Belle Vernon player to score in double figures. She netted 12 points.

West Mifflin’s record is 6-11.

Brownsville 44, Jefferson-Morgan 42

Ava Clark and Ciara Horabik each scored 16 points and Brownsville squandered a big lead before defeating Jefferson-Morgan 44-42 in a non-section game.

Brownsville (5-12) led 30-21 at halftime but Jefferson-Morgan (8-9) used the long-range shooting of Ava Wood to mount its own comeback and take a 39-37 lead into the fourth quarter. Wood pumped in a game-high 20 points that included six three-point field goals.

Winchester Thurston 60, Chartiers-Houston 41

Jasmyn Hollins and DeShae Cochran each scored 18 points, powering host Winchester Thurston to a 60-41 victory over Chartiers-Houston in a non-section game between two of the top teams in Class 2A.

Winchester Thurston (12-2) had a big first half and took a 30-9 lead into halftime. Chartiers-Houston (13-3) battled back with a 20-point third quarter and cut the deficit to single digits before getting into late foul trouble.

Freshman Brooklyn Hess, with 10 points, was the lone C-H player to score in double figures.

Baldwin 62, Peters Township 54

Baldwin stayed within striking distance of first place in Class 5A Section 4 by defeating Peters Township 62-54 at AHN Arena.

The Highlanders are 6-1 in section and 14-2 overall. PT drops to 2-6, 7-9.

Bri Morreale led the Indians with 18 points. Taylor McCullough followed with 12 points and Alina Sopko flipped in 11.

Washington 48, Brownsville 19

Washington (4-4, 8-7) limited Brownsville (0-8, 4-12) to five or fewer points in each quarter on its way to a 48-19 win in a Class 3A Section 3 game Monday.

Shawnti Fuller led the Prexies with 14 points and Faith Partozoti scored 12.

McGuffey 55, Keystone Oaks 52

Maura Janovich and Eliana Janovich had 15 points apiece as McGuffey edged Keystone Oaks (4-4, 8-7) for a 55-52 win in Class 3A Section action Monday.

The win has McGuffey (5-2, 10-7) tied for second place in the section. Quinn Schumacher chipped in 14 points for the Highlanders.

Ringgold 54, Southmoreland 33

Jada Gernot had 23 points to lift Ringgold (4-4, 7-8) to a 54-33 win over Southmoreland (0-9, 1-16) in a Class 4A Section 3 game Monday.

Addison Jenkins scored 15 points for the Rams, who outscored the Scotties, 33-19 in the second half.

In other games

Class 6A Section 2 boys leader Upper St. Clair stayed unbeaten in league play with a 69-37 victory at Canon-McMillan. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
