O-R Athlete of the Week: Paige Klodowski, Burgettstown
Name: Paige Klodowski
Grade: Junior
School: Burgettstown
Sport: Basketball
Klodowski’s week: Klodowski’s preferred method of attack is driving to the rim. But that’s the only way she can score the basketball and she proved that last week.
Klodowski was a model of consistency, scoring 20 points in a 40-17 win against Carlynton, 20 more in a 48-18 win over Bentworth and capped the week with 22 points, helping Burgettstown finish 3-0 on the week with a 50-29 win against California.
Klodowski credited her teammates with finding her when she was open.
“I got to the rim quite a bit and a lot of my points came from foul shots too,” Klodowski said. “My outside shot was working pretty well too. It was a little bit of everything and that always helps.”
Klodowski is the Blue Devils’ leading scorer and often the focus of opposing teams, but she’s become comfortable with having the attention on her.
“It feels really good and I’m fortunate that I was named a team captain,” Klodowski said. “My teammates are great. They all try to get me the ball and if they can’t get me the ball they do their best to score too.”
A team rebound: Burgettstown has had some solid teams in recent years and has had a bit of a resurgence after finishing 8-14 overall and fourth place in Class 2A Section 2 last season. The Blue Devils are 12-4 overall and have a 4-1 record in section play. They have a big game next Thursday against Fort Cherry, which is undefeated and atop the section.
“Our defense has been amazing this year,” Klodowski said. “We’ve all really put the pressure on and we’ve really connected a lot better than we did last year. We’re all really good friends and that always helps. We’re a lot more of a high-pressure and a higher energy team.”
Multi-sport athlete: Klodowski has played basketball since she was in third grade and her dad was her coach and mentor growing up. In seventh grade she added another sport to her repertoire. Volleyball.
It gives her another way to stay active when preparing for basketball season.
“All of my friends started playing volleyball and we thought it would be fun to play together,” Klodowski said. “It’s always good to play another sport. It really keeps me conditioned, but honestly I’m always focused on basketball. Even during volleyball season I’m shooting and dribbling the basketball every day. Volleyball is fun and it’s with my friends. It keeps me going.”
Beach goer: Klodowski’s favorite vacation spot is anywhere with a beach. It’s a good getaway, but the beach can also be a destination for basketball. Klodowski and her AAU team Strick Hoops went to a tournament in Myrtle Beach in the summer.
“We stayed down there for the whole week,” Klodowski said. “That’s definitely my favorite tournament of the year.”
One of her favorite hobbies is shopping. She enjoys going into the stores and hanging out with her friends.
Her favorite school subject is English and likes to write and read books.
