High school basketball: Belle Vernon girls stay tied for section lead

Belle Vernon grinded out a 42-32 road win at South Park on Thursday and moved ahead of the Eagles in the Class 4A Section 3 girls basketball standings.

Both teams came into the night 8-1 in section play. The Leopards improved to 9-1 in section play and 15-3 overall. They are tied with Elizabeth Forward for first place in the section.

Abby Russell had nine points for the Leopards and Aubrey Brown scored eight.

Hayley Bennett had nine points for South Park (8-2, 11-7).

Chartiers-Houston 53, Beth-Center 32

Mackenzie Walsh and Ava Kolovich scored 17 points apiece to help Chartiers-Houston secure a 53-32 win over Beth-Center in Class 2A Section 3.

The Bucs led 20-16 at halftime, but pulled away with a 33-17 advantage in the final two quarters.

Ali Wingard added 11 points for Chartiers-Houston (6-0, 14-2). Violent Trump scored 10 for the Bulldogs (3-3, 7-9).

Fort Cherry 45, Carlynton 7

Class 2A Section 2 leader Fort Cherry had no trouble in defeating visiting Carlynton, 45-7.

The Rangers are 6-0 in section and 11-5 overall. Fort Cherry led 10-0 after one quarter and 30-2 at halftime.

Allison Litman and Brooke Cornali scored nine points each to lead Fort Cherry.

Burgettstown 54, Northgate 11

Paige Klodowski led three Burgettstown players in double figures with 19 points and the Blue Devils kept their Class 2A Section 2 title hopes alive with a 54-11 thumping of host Northgate.

The Blue Devils (5-1, 13-4), who began the night one game behind first-place Fort Cherry, took control early, forging a 20-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Burgettstown led 32-7 at halftime.

Savanna Rush and Marlee Martin each tossed in 10 points for Burgettstown.

Bentworth 43, Jefferson-Morgan 35

Bella Moyer scored a game-high 15 points, leading Bentworth’s second-half comeback as the Bearcats rallied for a 43-38 win at Jefferson-Morgan in Class 2A Section 3.

Bentworth (3-3, 8-9) trailed 18-12 at halftime before getting its offense going in the second half. The Bearcats closed to within 27-25 after three quarters and won the game by scoring 18 points in the final period.

Jesse Laskey chipped in with 15 points for Bentworth.

Bailey Cervone led J-M (1-5, 9-9) with 13 points.

Monessen 41, Mapletown 25

Madison Johnson scored 18 points and Monessen evened its Class A Section 2 record with a 41-25 victory against Mapletown.

The Greyhounds are 5-5 in section play and 6-9 overall.

Jaidyn Rankin added 12 points for the Greyhounds, who raced out to an 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Johnson had 10 points in the first quarter.

Chloe McClead had nine points for Mapletown (1-9, 2-16).

South Fayette 69, Montour 32

South Fayette continued its onslaught of Class 5A Section 3 by blitzing Montour 69-32.

Haylie Lamonde led four South Fayette players in double figures with 17 points. Ryan Oldaker scored 14, Lailah Wright had 13 and Juliette Leroux finished with 12. The Lions (9-0, 17-1) led 49-16 at halftime.

Tiffany Miller scored 13 for the Spartans (4-5, 12-5).

McGuffey 59, Charleroi 21

A big second quarter helped McGuffey pull away from Charleroi en route to a 59-21 win in a Class 3A Section 3 game.

The Highlanders outscored the Cougars, 27-6 in the second to take a 35-13 lead into halftime.

Eliana Janovich led McGuffey (6-2, 11-7) with 18 points and Hailey Rogers scored 11.

Eden Smith scored 10 for Charleroi (1-8, 5-12).

Serra Catholic 73, Avella 20

Bella Dumbroski led four Serra Catholic players in double figures with 26 points in a 73-20 win over Avella (1-9, 4-14) in Class A Section 2.

Abby Genees had 15 points, Lexi Pearce scored 13 and Niki Sfanos netted 10 for Eagles, who improved to 9-1 in the section and 10-5 overall.

Boys results

Jefferson-Morgan 61, Waynesburg 44

Jeremiah Robertson poured in a game-high 35 points, driving Jefferson-Morgan to a 61-44 non-section win at Waynesburg.

The Rockets led 9-8 after one quarter and then took control of the game with a 16-5 scoring edge in the second period to build a 25-13 lead going into halftime.

Waynesburg put three players in double figures led by Dane Woods’ 14 points to go with 11 rebounds. Jackson Dean added 13 points and Austin Surber had 11.
