High school basketball: Big 3rd quarter pushes Fort Cherry past Beth-Center
Connor Vansickle poured in a game-high 27 points, Tyler Wolfe had a double-double and Fort Cherry defeated visiting Beth-Center 63-44 in a Class 2A Section 3 gboys basketball game Friday night.
The Rangers (7-3, 9-7) didn’t pull away until the third quarter. Fort Cherry trailed 29-27 at halftime but took control with a 28-2 scoring edge in the third quarter.
Wolfe finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Gavin Grace led the floor game with nine assists.
Bradyen Ozohonish’s 16 points were tops for B-C (5-5, 9-8). Jason Zellie tossed in 11.
Baldwin 72, Trinity 56: Evan Golish hit for 26 points, leading three Baldwin players in double figures, and the Highlanders won at Trinity, 72-56.
Jonah Williamson had a strong offensive game for the Hillers (2-7, 4-11) with 23 points, Ian Migyanko followed with 12.
Southmoreland 75, Charleroi 60
Ty Whoric scored a game-high 29 points and Class 3A Section 4 leader Southmoreland pulled away down the stretch to beat Charleroi 75-60 on the Scotties’ home floor.
Southmoreland (6-0, 10-6) led 40-34 at halftime and Charleroi (3-3, 9-9) closed to within one point in the third quarter. The Scotties, however, led 55-47 after three quarters and outscored the Cougars 20-13 in the fourth quarter.
Luke Stimett scored 15 points for Southmoreland Brock Pritts chipped in with 14.
Xavion Thomas’s 16 points were tops for Charleroi and Jackson Kernako netted 12.
Jefferson-Morgan 63, Mapletown 15
Jefferson-Morgan cruised to an easy 63-15 victory over winless Mapletown in a Class 2A Section 3 game played on the Maples’ home court.
J-M led 30-2 after one quarter and 49-4 at halftime.
Jeremiah Robertson led the J-M (9-1, 16-1) attack with 14 points.
Kaleb Evosevich scored 10 points for Mapletown (0-10, 0-17), which has lost 46 games in a row.
McGuffey 46, Carlynton 40
Sam Stout had 21 points and 15 rebounds, helping McGuffey fight off Carlynton 46-40 in a Class 3A Section 2 game played on the Highlanders’ home court. The win pushed McGuffey’s record above .500 overall at 9-8. The Highlanders are 2-4 in section. Carlynton slipped to 1-5, 4-12.
Grayden Harvey scored 15 points for the Cougars, who trailed 16-14 at halftime and 29-26 after three quarters.
Bishop Canevin 42, Washington 37
Class 3A Section leader Bishop Canevin had enough Drew Allen to fight off host Washington, 42-37.
Allen poured in a game-high 24 points and helped the Crusaders (6-0, 10-6) build a 27-19 lead at halftime. Wash High (2-4, 8-9) stayed within striking distance and was down by only 33-27 entering the fourth quarter, but the Prexies were held to 10 points over the final eight minutes.
Tristan Reed led the Wash High attack by scoring 18 points and Will Callahan contributed 12.
Derry 48, Belle Vernon 46
Stanley Rajkovich scored a game-high 20 points, including a game-winning basket at the buzzer in overtime as Derry defeated visiting Belle Vernon 48-46 to create a logjam atop Class 4A Section 3.
Both Derry and Belle Vernon are 7-2 in the section.
The game was tied 33-33 after three quarters and went to overtime tied at 48-46. Rajkovich’s buzzer-beater was the only basket in the extra session.
Luca Ghilani scored 16 points to lead Belle vernon (11-8 overall). Vincenzo Franicia had 11 points. The Leopards hurt their chances of winning by making only 3 of 10 free throws.
Nazareth Prep 53, Avella 51
Tavon Jackson and Ahsan Harrison each scored 13 points and Nazareth Prep surged ahead in the fourth quarter to beat visiting Avella 53-51 in a showdown for sole possession of first place in Class A Section 1.
The game was close throughout. Avella (4-2, 12-4) led 15-9 after one quarter but Nazareth Prep (5-1, 5-10) moved ahead 19-18 at halftime. Avella went back in front 41-39 at the end of three quarters, but the hosts had a 14-10 scoring edge in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Cameron Ullom recorded a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds for Avella. Bryce Wright also scored 13 and Rylan Bell had 10.
Waynesburg 76, Brownsville 47
Jackson Dean and Dane Woods each had a double-double as Waynesburg overpowered visiting Brownsville 76-47 in Class 3A Section 4.
The win evened Waynesburg’s record in the section at 3-3. The Raiders are 6-10 overall.
Dean had a game-high 21 points to go with 11 rebounds. He also was credited with six assists. Woods had 15 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Cole Headlee added 16 points for the Raiders and Austin Surber netted 14.
Max Dieudonne led Brownsville (0-6, 1-13) by scoring 16 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 61, Waynesburg 44 Jeremiah Robertson poured in a game-high 35 points, driving Jefferson-Morgan to a 61-44 non-section win at Waynesburg on Thursday.
The Rockets led 9-8 after one quarter and then took control of the game with a 16-5 scoring edge in the second period to build a 25-13 lead going into halftime.
Waynesburg put three players in double figures led by Dane Woods’ 14 points to go with 11 rebounds. Jackson Dean added 13 points and Austin Surber had 11.

Trinity 50, Baldwin 44
Sutton Williamson scored a game-high 15 points and Trinity dealt a major blow to Baldwin’s chances of gaining a part of the Class 5A Section 4 title as the Hillers pulled out a 50-44 home-court win Friday night.
Baldwin (6-2, 14-3) led by one point after one quarter and by two (25-23) at halftime. Trinity (6-3, 13-4) moved ahead 38-33 at the end of three quarters and held a 12-11 scoring edge over the final eight minutes.
Trinity put three players in double figures as balanced scoring was key to the Hillers’ win. Brently Layhue and Gabby Humphreys each tossed in 10 points.Layhue also grabbed 14 rebounds.
Julianne Ott paced Baldwin with 13 points and Laci Bernotas added 10.
Monessen 48, Carmichaels 28
Raynia Lyons scored 21 points, powering Monessen to a 48-28 road win over Carmichaels in a non-section game.
Monessen (7-9) held Carmichaels to only eight points in the first half but didn’t push its lead to double digits until the third quarter. The Greyhounds scored 31 points in the second half.
Na’Jazian Carter had 12 points and Madison Johnson netted 10 for Monessen.
Bentley Lukacs and Joselyn Carter each scored eight points for Carmichaels (1-15).
Keystone Oaks 43, Chartiers-Houston 34
Hannah York scored 17 points, Nina Deweese added 16 and Keystone Oaks stopped a three-game losing streak by beating visiting Chartiers-Houston, 43-34.
KO (9-7) led 20-12 at halftime but Chatiers-Houston (14-3) stormed back and took a 26-25 lead at the end of three quarters. KO won the game with an 18-7 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.
Ava Kolovich led the Bucs in scoring with 10 points.
Cameron 40, West Greene 36:
West Greene couldn’t overcome an ice-cold first-half shooting performance in a 40-36 loss to visiting Cameron (W.Va.) despite a 21-point, 14-rebound performance by the Pioneers’ Kendra Tharp.
Cameron held West Greene to a season low 11 first half points to take a 15-point lead into halftime. West Greene (11-5) clawed its way to within three points late but Cameron’s Kendra Thomas secured the win for the Dragons with three free throws inside the final minute for the last of her 10 points. Macy Bertram scored 11 of her team-high 13 points for Cameron in the first half.
