High school basketball: Janovich’s free throws give McGuffey 48-46 win

Sam Stout scored 19 points and Ayden Janovich made two free throws with seven seconds remaining to give McGuffey a 48-46 win at Freedom in a non-section boys basketball game Wednesday night.
Freedom had a chance to win but McGuffey blocked a three-point attempt as time expired.
The Highlanders had to fight off a Freedom comeback. McGuffey led 25-19 at halftime and 38-30 at the end of three quarters.
Kolt McGovern scored 14 points to help the McGuffey cause.
Freedom’s Will Kunrow matched Stout for game scoring honors with 19 points. Chase Andrews had 15.
Avella 76, Beth-Center 71
Bryce Wright had a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds, powering Avella to a 76-71 overtime win over Beth-Center in a non-section game.
Avella led 39-37 at halftime and the score was tied 50-50 after three quarters and 64-64 at the end of regulation. The Eagles held a 12-7 scoring advantage in the overtime.
Nate Cilia contributed 16 points for Avella and Cam Ullom had 15.
Beth-Center put four players in double figures led by Brayden Huff’s 19 points and 18 from Jason Zellie. Brayden Ozohonish finished with 11 points and Tyler Kurowski tossed in 10.
Peters Township 81, Trinity 48
Lucas Saxe and Dylan Donovan combined for 57 points, sparking Peters Township to an 81-48 victory over Trinity in a Class 5A Section 3 boys basketball game at Hiller Hall.
Peters Township (7-2, 13-5) led 16-8 after one quarter and then scored at least 20 points in each of the three remaining quarters to pull away.
Saxe led the PT attack with a game-high 29 points and Donovan was right behind with 28. Sax made seven three-point field goals and Donovan made five from behind the stripe.
Jonah Williamson scored 22 points for Trinity and Anthony Giorgi had 11.
Keystone Oaks 53, Washington 46
Despite a 23-point performance by Washington’s Tristan Reed, Keystone Oaks was able to pull out a 53-46 win over the Prexies in a Class 3A Section game on the Golden Eagles’ home court.
The difference in the game was the second quarter, when KO (6-1, 13-3) turned a 9-5 deficit after one period into a 21-16 halftime advantage. KO led 35-26 at the end of three quarters.
Erond Jakupi led KO with 21 points and Joey Colton had 12.
Wash High is 2-5 in section and 8-10 overall.
Elizabeth Forward 75, Belle Vernon 71
Tyler Basic scored 33 points, Daniel Spence added 24 and Elizabeth Forward knocked Belle Vernon out of first place in Class 4A Section 3 by beating the Leopards, 75-71.
EF (7-2, 11-7) swept the season series against Belle Vernon (7-3, 11-9). The Warriors, who led 40-34 at halftime, had to fight off a second-half comeback by Belle Vernon.
The Leopards used a balanced attack as six players scored in double figures led by Luca Ghilani, Dane Daugherty and AJ Watson with 12 points each. Cam Jenko and Elijah Majors both netted 11 and Jude Minniti had 10.
Fort Cherry 86, Mapletown 20
Connor Vansickle scored 22 points, Gavin Grace had 21 and Landon Trnavsky almost had a double-double as Fort Cherry routed winless Mapletown 86-20 in Class 2A Section 3.
Trnavasky finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Rangers, who led 39-4 after one quarter and 59-9 at halftime.

Peters Township 52, Trinity 48
Sparked by a 30-point performance by guard Taylor McCullough, Peters Township pulled out a 52-48 victory over Trinity in Class 5A Section 4 at Hiller Hall.
The game was close throughout. The score was tied 20-20 at halftime and PT (3-6, 9-9) moved out to a 37-36 lead after three quarters.
Bri Morreale added 13 points for the Indians.
Sutton Williams led Trinity (6-4, 13-5) with 14 points and Gabby Humphreys netted 12.
Beth-Center 51, Jefferson-Morgan 40
Violet Trump scored a game-high 21 points, sparking Beth-Center to a 51-40 home-court win over Jefferson-Morgan in Class 2A Section 3.
The Bulldogs won the game by holding J-M to 16 points over the middle two quarters as B-C turned a 16-11 lead after one period into a 40-27 advantage.
Brelynn Wood led the Rockets with 14 points and Bailey Cerbone scored 10.
