Peters Township’s Dylan Donovan goes up for a basket during the Indians’ win over South Fayette. Donovan scored 14 points and became Peters Township’s all-time scoring leader.

McMURRAY – Dylan Donovan has had plenty of big moments in his Peters Township career and now he can say he’s the school’s all-team leading scorer for boys basketball.

Donovan broke the school record with a free throw at the 5:43 mark of the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points as Peters Township cruised to a 66-46 win over South Fayette Friday night at AHN Arena.

Eric Lang had the previous record of 1,292 points, which was set in 2000.

Donovan needed 13 points to break the record. He saw the free throw go through and walked off the foul line. Peters Township called timeout which gave him a moment to celebrate with his teammates.

“It feels good,” Donovan said of breaking the record. “It’s crazy to think about. It’s something that I’ve wanted since I was a little kid and now that it’s actually here it’s pretty crazy.”

Donovan came agonizingly close to setting the record a couple times on a basket, but had two shots roll around the rim and out. He never doubted it would eventually happen though.

“I think I had three shots that went in and out and I really just wanted to get it over with,” Donovan said. “Finally I ended up on the free throw line. It’s a pretty crazy feeling. The whole second half was crazy.”

With 1:57 remaining in the game Donovan was replaced by his younger brother Cooper Donovan and left to a round of applause.

The Indians improved to 8-2 in Class 5A Section 4 play and 14-5 overall and completed the season sweep of the Lions. They won at South Fayette 49-45 in overtime back on Jan. 6.

South Fayette fell to 5-5 and 7-11.

Donovan, who eclipsed 1,000 points on Dec. 8 in a win over Seneca Valley, showed why he’s been an elite scorer in his high school career. He hit a couple pull-up three pointers and successfully drove the lane, showing a soft touch around the rim.

“It’s incredible,” Peters Township coach Joe Urmann said of Donovan’s accomplishment. “It’s a lot of points and you have to play for a long time on good teams and be a major contributor to accomplish that. Dylan certainly checks all of those boxes.”

Donovan’s teammates did plenty of work offensively too.

A Jake Wetzel dunk and a pair of three-pointers by Jayden Greco spotted Peters Township an 8-0 lead.

The Indians never looked back from there.

Tyson Wright made a jumper for South Fayette’s first basket at the 3:40 mark of the quarter.

Donovan got his first basket on a driving layup and ended the quarter with a three-pointer from the right side to give the Indians a 13-4 lead.

Wright gave South Fayette in the second quarter with three baskets inside the paint. They were sandwiched around a three pointer by Donovan. The last of the three cut Peters Township’s lead to 16-10 at 4:52 of the second and forced an Indians timeout.

After the timeout, Peters Township went on a 10-0 run which started with a pull up three by Donovan, which got him a point away from the record. Cameron Kirch also had a three during the run.

South Fayette called timeout, but the onslaught continued.

Lucas Saxe hit a three and buried an off-balance jumper at the buzzer to give Peters Township a 31-14 lead at halftime.

Owen Keener did his best to keep South Fayette within striking distance in the third quarter. He scored eight points on baskets all around the rim.

But two threes from Greco, one from Saxe and another by Dan Dudek kept Peters Township comfortably in front. The Indians led 46-28 after three quarters.

Wright had a strong night inside for the Lions. He finished with a game-high 22 points and Keener scored 14.

Saxe and Greco made four three-pointers apiece. Saxe had 16 points and Greco scored 14. Dudek had 11 points.

“Teams key on (Dylan) and that opens up the floor to get other guys involved,” Urmann said. “We encourage our guys to shoot the ball with confidence when they get an opportunity and certainly took advantage of that tonight.”

In between the first and second quarters, the 2025 WPIAL championship Peters Township football team was recognized on the court.

South Fayette 4 10 14 18 – 46

Peters Township 13 18 15 20 – 66

South Fayette: Tyson Wright, 22 points; Owen Keener, 14.

Peters Township: Lucas Saxe, 16 points; Dylan Donovan, 14; Jayden Greco, 14; Dan Dudek, 11.
