High school basketball: Fuller has triple-double in Avella victory

Brayden Fuller had a rare triple-double and Avella stayed in contention for the Class A Section 1 boys basketball title with a 63-49 road win over Cornell on Friday night. Fuller scored 17 points and was credited with 13 assists and 11 rebounds for the Eagles, who are 5-2 in the section and 14-4 overall. Avella led 34-23 at halftime before Cornell (2-6, 4-14) closed to within single digits at 43-35 at the end of three quarters. A 20-point fourth quarter secured the win for the Eagles. Cam Ullom matched Fuller by scoring 17 points and Bryce Wright flipped in 13. Cornell’s Eduardo Benitez scored a game-high 18 points and Terrence Collington had 16. Washington 62, Sto-Rox 58 Vincent Johnson had a double-double and Washington boosted its playoff chances with a 62-58 victory over Sto-Rox at Wash High gymnasium. The win moved Washington (3-4, 9-10) ahead of Sto-Rox (2-5, 5-13) in the standings and into a playoff position with one week remaining in the regular season. The Prexies had to come from behind against the Vikings, who led 29-25 at halftime. A 22-16 scoring edge for Wash High moved the Prexies into the lead. Johnson finished with 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Tristan Reed followed in the scoring column with 14 points and William Callan dropped in 11. L.J. Washington led Sto-Rox with 22 points. Charleroi 63, Mount Pleasant 59 Xavion Thomas poured in a game-high 27 points, powering Charleroi to a 63-59 victory at Mount Pleasant in Class 3A Section 4. Charleroi (4-3, 10-9) moved above the .500 mark with the win but had to fight off a late comeback attempt by Mount Pleasant. Charleroi led 26-25 at halftime and moved out to a 48-31 lead at the end of three quarters. Mount Pleasant scored 28 points in the fourth quarter. Jackson Kernako finished with 11 points for Charleroi and Brock Henderson had 10. Chartiers-Houston 58, Beth-Center 35 Class 2A Section 3 leader Chartiers-Houston moved a step closer to the title by beating visiting Beth-Center 58-35 on the Bucs’ home court. Chartiers-Houston (12-0, 17-3) won with a balanced attack. The Bucs placed four players in double figures led by Bryson Boskovich’s 14 points. Brody McCrerey followed with 12 points, and Wes Yeater and Aaron Walsh each checked in with 11 points. Jason Zellie led Beth-Center (6-6, 10-10) with 13 points. Jefferson-Morgan 52, Fort Cherry 42, OT Jefferson-Morgan remained within striking distance of first place in Class 2A Section 3 by winning at Fort Cherry, 52-42, in overtime. The Rockets, who are 11-1 in the section, squandered a six-point lead entering the fourth quarter but responded by shutting out Fort Cherry 10-0 in overtime. Jeremiah Robertson sparked the J-M offense by scoring a game-high 26 points. Deyton Marion added 14. Gavin Grace’s 10 points led Fort Cherry. Southmoreland 62, Waynesburg 61 Noah Felentzer scored 19 points, Brock Pritts added 18 and Class 3A Section 4 leader Southmoreland had to hold off an upset bid by host Waynesburg before pulling out a 62-61 win. It was a back-and-forth game throughout as Southmoreland led 11-8 after one quarter but Waynesburg took a 29-25 lead into halftime. The key to the game was the third quarter, when Southmoreland used a 21-10 scoring edge to forge a 46-39 lead going into the final period. Waynesburg’s Jackson Dean scored a game-high 23 points. Cole Headlee had 14 points and Dane Woods grabbed 12 rebounds to go with eight points. McGuffey 52, Keystone Oaks 48, 2 OT Sam Stout and Kolt McGowan combined for 37 points as McGuffey continued its drive to the postseason with a 52-48 double-overtime victory over visiting Keystone Oaks. The game went to overtime tied at 39-39 and the first extra session ended in another deadlock at 43-43. The Highlanders won the game by outsourcing KO 9-5 in the second overtime. Stout led the Highlanders with a game-high 20 points. He had a double-double, finishing with 10 rebounds. McGowan scored 17 points. Aaron Beck’s 18 points were tops for KO. Belle Vernon 77, East Allegheny 69 Luca Ghilani scored 21 points, Dane Daugherty added 19 and Belle Vernon, the highest-scoring team in the local area, defeated host East Allegheny 77-69 in Class 4A Section 3. Cam Jenko added 10 points for the Leopards (8-3, 12-9). Cedric Mack led four East Allegheny players in double figures with 16 points. Carmichaels 67, Mapletown 35 Scott Maskill scored 20 points, sparking Carmichaels to a 67-35 victory over winless Mapletown in Class 2A Section 3. Alex Toth chipped in with 11 points for the Mikes and Chase Ankrom had 10. Colton Taylor’s 9 points were tops for Mapletown. Girls results West Greene 46, Clairton 27: West Greene used a 21-3 scoring advantage in the third quarter to build a commanding lead and went on to a 46-27 victory over Clairton in a Class A Section 2 game. West Greene (8-3, 13-5) led 21-13 at halftime and the big third quarter pushed the Pioneers’ advantage to 42-16. Madelyn Roberts scored 16 points and Kendra Tharp chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds to lead the West Greene attack. West Greene has clinched a playoff berth for the 10th consecutive season. Karma Fuqua scored 15 points for Clairton (3-8, 6-9). McGuffey 40, Brownsville 33: McGuffey got back on the winning track by defeating host Brownsville, 40-33, in Class 3A Section 3. Mykenna Meighen led the Highlanders with 12 points and Eliana Janovich added 11. California 42, Carmichaels 12: California stayed in contention for the Class 2A Section 3 title with a 42-12 road win over Carmichels.
