Sydney Gonglik’s impressive junior season has put her among the best in the state.

Gonglik, who led Bentworth to its first WPIAL softball title, was named the Class 2A Pitcher of the Year by the Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association.

She leads a large contingent of 17 local girls that made either the first or second team in their respective classifications on the All-State teams, which were released Monday.

The teams were selected from approximately 700 nominations by high school coaches and media members statewide. A first team and second team were then voted on and chosen for each of the six classifications by PHSSCA members.

Five players were selected for each position, plus a utility, for both the first and second teams.

Gonglik, an LSU commit, was dominant for Bentworth. She finished with a 19-3 record and a 0.89 ERA.

She tossed seven no-hitters, had 270 strikeouts to 20 walks in 126 innings pitched. Only 16 earned runs were scored on her in 22 appearances and she yielded just 46 hits. Her hitting was good too. She carried a .522 batting average with nine homers, 11 doubles, three triples and drove in 24 runs.

Gonglik was joined by a couple of her Bearcats teammates on the Class 2A All-State team, including her younger sister Mikayla.

Mikayla Gonglik, a freshman, was a first-team shortstop. She had a team-best .529 batting average with eight doubles, three triples, three homers and 25 RBI. Bentworth catcher Zoie McDonald was named to the second team.

Chartiers-Houston had five representatives on the first team from its group that made a run to the state championship, where it lost to Laurel, 7-1.

Seniors Seanna Riggle (second base) and Lauren Rush (shortstop), junior Taryne Drilak (pitcher) and freshmen Brooklyn Hess (outfield) and Kiera Drilak (third base) were the five Bucs that made the All-State team.

Riggle will continue her career at Washington & Jefferson and Rush is headed to play at Baldwin-Wallace.

Carmichaels had three players make the Class A All-State teams.

Standout pitcher Bailey Barnyak and shortstop Carys McConnell made the first team, while second baseman Ke’lani Chun received second team honors.

Barnyak, an Indiana (Pa.) recruit, was 17-6 with a 0.47 ERA and had 247 strikeouts to 29 walks in 133.1 innings. McConnell hit .406 with a team-best five homers and 34 RBI in her final season of softball. She’s entering a prelaw program at Pitt.

West Greene had a pair of Class A second teamers in Madelyn Roberts (outfield) and Katie Brudnock (utility).

Two local girls made the Class 5A second team: Peters Township’s Braylin Fusco (shortstop) and Trinity’s Ally Krenzelak (outfield).

Krenzelak made an All-State team for the second year in a row.

In Class 4A, Belle Vernon’s Addy Newman is a first-team outfielder and her Leopards teammate Kaylee Sypolt made the second team.

Belle Vernon second baseman Sydney Callaway was one of two players to win a Courage Award along with Kylee Kulbatsky of Dubois Central Catholic.

Callaway’s father died from a massive heart attack on March 1, just days before the season began. She was not even sure she would play her senior year of softball, but ultimately decided to play and honor her father.
