Fort Cherry scored a run in the top of the first inning and starter Colton Temple and reliever Dylan Lueck made sure that was enough as the Rangers defeated host Everett 1-0 in the PIAA Class 2A baseball playoffs Monday.

The win sends Fort Cherry (19-2) to the quarterfinals on Thursday against District 10 champion Mercyhurst Prep (20-2), a 4-0 winner over Riverview in the first round.

Fort Cherry scored three batters into the game against Everett, the District 5 champion. Landon Trnavsky led off the game with a single and stole second base. Following a lineout, Temple smacked an RBI single to right field and the Rangers had the only run they would need.

Temple pitched six-plus innings for the win. He allowed only two hits and three walks. He struck out five.

Temple hit the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh with pitches and was replaced by Lueck, and Everett bunted the runners up to second and third.

Following an intentional walk that loaded the bases, Everett popped out to third base for the inning’s second out and a fielder’s choice grounder ended the game.

Fort Cherry was limited to two hits, none after the first inning, by Chase Sherwood, who struck out seven.

Hollidaysburg 10, South Fayette 0: Hollidaysburg used three big innings to beat South Fayette 10-0 in five innings in the first round of the PIAA Class 5A baseball playoffs.

Hollidaysburg, the District 6 champion, scored three times in the third inning, added two more in the fourth and ended the game with a five-run fifth.

South Fayette (14-11) was held to one hit.

Cambridge Springs 8, Jefferson-Morgan 1: Kayla Crawford pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Angela Hassinger hit a two-run homer as District 10 champion Cambridge Springs defeated Jefferson-Morgan, 8-1, in a PIAA Class A first round softball game at Allegheny College’s Robertson Field on Monday.

The Blue Devils (13-6) advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals against Berlin Brothersvalley, which shut out Carmichaels, 2-0, with the site and time to be determined.

Cambridge Springs scored three runs in the first and Hassinger’s homer in the second inning made it 5-0.

The Rockets (17-8) scored their lone run in the top of the third when Ava Wood reached on an error, stole second and came home on Emilee Bazzoli’s single.

Bridget Bullock’s two-run triple sparked a three-run rally in the bottom of the inning to give the Blue Devils an 8-1 lead.

Losing pitcher Bazzoli surrendered eight hits and struck out seven. Crawford had 11 strikeouts. Neither pitcher gave up a run over the final four frames.

Morgan Dunton and Carly Cunningham had two hits apiece for Cambridge Springs, which also got a double from Jaydan Simmons.

Bazzoli and Gabby Marmie each had two hits for J-M, the third-place team out of the WPIAL, which was making it’s first appearance in the PIAA tournament since 2015.

The Rockets’ only other hit was a single by Addalei Larkin.
