High school baseball: Avella pitchers shut down Wash High in season opener

Bryce Wright and Cam Ullom combined on a three-hit shutout as Avella blanked Washington 4-0 in a windy season-opener Friday afternoon at EQT Park.

Wright started and pitched five innings for the Eagles, allowing two hits. He walked three and struck out seven. Ullom pitched the final two innings for a save. He allowed one hit and struck out three.

Avella scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the third. The Eagles were held to four hits by Wash High pitcher Will Callan and Tristan Coney.

Avella’s Tristan Davis hit a two-run double in the first inning and had an RBI groundout in the third. Wright helped his own cause with an RBI single.

Peters Township 12, Ringgold 2: David Oberschele drove in three runs and tossed three shutout innings of relief as Peters Township opened the season with a 12-2 victory in six innings over Ringgold in a non-section game at Joe Maize Field.

Peters Township led 4-2 before scoring three times in the fifth and six times in the sixth to end the game.

Brody Takacs, Gabe Marino, Collin Stofik and Obserschele each doubled for the Indians.

Ringgold’s Gavin Angotti went 3-for-3 with a home run and Michael Green also hit a solo homer.

Ellwood City 5, Chartiers-Houston 1: Ellwood City scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to a 5-1 victory over Chartiers-Houston.

Three Ellwood City pitchers combined on a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts. Dom Hogue struck out seven, but walked five, over 4.1 innings.

The Bucs scored their run in the third inning on a single by Aaron Lake, a passed ball and an error.

Aaron Walsh hit a double for C-H.

Albert Gallatin 6, California 5: Colton Chipps hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning as Albert Gallatin rallied to beat California, 6-5.

California came back from deficits of 3-1 and 4-2 to take the lead by scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth. Landon Abercrombie’s RBI single put the Trojans on top at 5-4.

Kanyon Sutton hit a solo homer for Albert Gallatin.

Carmichaels 11, Monessen 0: Jordan Davis hit two doubles and scored twice, and four Carmichels pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Mikes opened the season with an 11-0 win at Monessen.

The Mikes, who reached the WPIAL Class A championship game a year ago, scored in each of the first six innings. Braden Rayle and Cooper Richards doubled for Carmichaels. Dominic Yazzani started on the mound for the Mikes and struck out seven over 2.2 innings. Yazzaani also was on base four times.
