High school softball: Mapletown opens with win in extra innings

Mapletown scored two runs on two errors and a double in the top of the ninth inning to beat California, 10-8, in a season-opening game on Friday.

Mapletown took an 8-6 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh, but California forced extra innings on an RBI double by Bailee Cuthbertson and a run-scoring triple by Norah Shen.

Chartiers-Houston 21, Geibel Catholic 0:

Chartiers-Houston opened its season with an easy 21-0 thumping of visiting Geibel Catholic in only three innings.

The Bucs scored 15 runs in the first inning.

Taryne Drilak drove in four runs and Seanna Riggle went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBI and three runs. Drilak tossed two hitless innings and Riggle added a third.

C-H’s 21 runs came on only five hits as Geibel pitchers walked 17 batters and hit two. The Gators did not have a hit.
