High school softball: Gonglik, Barnyak dominate in circle; C-H hits 7 HRs
Junior Sydney Gonglik, an LSU recruit, fired a five-inning no-hitter as Bentworth opened its season with a 10-0 win over Mahomet-Seymour (Ill.) on Thursday in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Mahomet-Seymour had only one batter reach base, that being a hit batsman with two outs in the second inning. Gonglik struck out 10.
Bentworth struck for five runs in the top of the first inning and scored five more in the fifth.
Alexa Babirad went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Addison McVicker also was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Carmichaels 6, Austin Prep 0: It was only the season opener for Carmichaels, but pitcher Bailey Barnyak appears to be in midseason form.
Barnyak, a senior righthander, fired a two-hit shutout Thursday as Carmichaels defeated Austin Prep (Mass.) 6-0 Thursday in Orlando, Fla.
Barnyak struck out 16 and walked only two. The Mikes’ offense supported her with a two-run first inning and a three-run third.
Carys McConnell led Carmichaels at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI. Barnyak was 2-for-2 with a triple and freshman Kenlee Machesky was 2-for-3 with a double.
Chartiers-Houston 20, Bishop Canevin 1: Chartiers-Houston pounded out 20 hits and had three players with multiple home runs as the Bucs routed Bishop Canevin, 20-1.
Lauren Rush, Seanna Riggle and freshman Kiera Drilak each smacked two home runs. Rush was 3-for-3 with six RBI, Drilak went 3-for-4 with five RBI and Riggle was 3-for-3 with four RBI. Combined, the trio was 9-for-10 with six home runs and 15 RBI.
Sophia Robinson also homered for the Bucs.
Rish also had a triple and Aubree Randolph doubled. Brooklyn Hess had four hits and scored four times.
Pitchers Taryne Drilak and Riggle combined on a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
